X1950 Pro on 400W PSU?

The 7900GS is not that much better than the X1950 Pro on power consumption. The biggest problem I see is your 12v rail is only rated for 17A.
A 8600 or 2600 level card is probably the best you can do on the PSU, but I could be wrong. Maybe someone with a 1950Pro will have a more
optimistic opinion.

Those that are running a X1950Pro on a small PSU, what is your 12V rail rated at? His only has the
"single" 17A rail which might provide 170w on a good day. That is what I am basing my opinion on,
not the overall wattage. The linked FSP unit is rated for 300W on the 12V rails alone which would be
plenty for most video cards.

I was running an x1950gt on a 420 watt with 18A on the 12v rail and it would cause my computer to restart the action got "intense." On the box for my card it recommends 30A, I guess they weren't kidding. Recently got a new PSU with 34A and things haven't been better.

Video card PSU requirements are routinely overstated - and with good reason, most people have over rated POS power supplies.

^^^ Truth. If you have an Antec, Enermax, etc, high-end PSU, even the 380/400w ones will run an X1950PRo all day long. If you have joe chang's mystery PSU that came with your case and a sticker that says '4xx' watt, then you probably want to think about a better PSU.

And the OP definitely has the Joe Chang special.

I wouldn't try anything over a 2600XT, although the real answer is "buy a better PSU".

Don't even for a minute think that the Rosewill will be good for a x1950pro GPU. Yes you might initially get it working, but after time and heat the PSU will lose efficiency. Did you read my link on previous post? It uses a very efficient Antec PSU. You could use that to power your x1950pro, but wouldn't have alot left over. So you could pick up the 430w version, which would leave you more room and not cost too much more.

Hmm if it runs on a dell PSU then it should run fine on mine too right?

Dell PSU's are highly UNDERrated. They are really quite high quality.

I ran mine on a Coolmax 400W and it did fine. That coolmax PSU was so light it felt like there was nothing inside of it. Talk about wimpy.
