sm8000, if the CPU lacks at least SSE2 then no GPU will help with DxVA of AVC and VC-1. Otherwise an X1650XT or higher or any GF7000 series (such as 7300GT) would be better.

DxVA of MPEG-2 does not require SSE2 nor would the variance be significant.

For software-only decoding, ATI is better than Nvidia. But in such case I doubt a higher-end GPU would help significantly.

Well, looks like my Athlon XP doesn't have SSE2. I'm not sure what the rest of those acronyms mean or how they affect me

Many new games will still be made to run on DX9 ... for another couple of years ... no doubt

in fact, soon-to-be-released [Q4?] games like Crysis are DX9 which *also* have some DX10 features for Vista/DX10 players ... more dx10 will be *patched into* the game after release.

as there are more and more DX10/Vista gamers, less emphasis and fewer games will be available for DX9 cards

Can I swap my 6800GT with x1950PRO without upgrading power supply or other system components? Then I could sell my 6800gt and get part of the money back!

NO! ... not imo ... it is not worth possible damage

i did - same TT 480-watter and my x1950p burned out on Day 31 ... i had to back my P4's OC down to give it enough power.

30a on the 12v rail is realistic

get a better PS and you can also OC that A64 3200+ and you will make full use of you x1950p ... as it is, your CPU will be a slight bottleneck

I don't like overclocking stuff, and I forgot to mention that I only have:
1 hard drive
1 dvd drive
2x 120mm fans
1x92 mm fans
stock cooling on everything,
no overclocks

and that's it!

By the way, can I use a 24pin PSU on a 20-pin motherboard? I think it's possible.
EDIT: just called my local Houston MicroCenter and they have OP's deal in-store.

EDIT2: It is NOT A64 3200+!
It is Socket A AMD 3200+ (32bit) that is also basically un-overclockable.

I have a Tt Silent PurePower 430W I purchased over a year ago and just upgraded from A64 s939 3000+ and x800xt pe to a 4000+ and sapphire x1950pro 512MB. Works just fine. I have 18A on my 12v rail as well.

i have this card in a dell 400sc with the stock (250w) power supply and i haven't had any problems. my system isn't that loaded so maybe that's why it works, all i have in it is a single 7200 rpm hd, dvdr, pci wlan card and a sblive. unfortunately i am severely limited by my p4 2.4 ghz processor but i'm looking at upgrading it now. if not i'll probably sell the card on here.

That one is PCIE. I cant't find the AGP version on their site now, they may have pulled it.
