SORRY FOR THE REPOST, i've put this up in the technical support forum as well, but since it's a video related issue, i'd like to please ask for help here as well. Please don't be mad; if you dont' feel like it belongs here, feel free to skip over the post

-----------------------------------------------------

Hello,

Here are my current specs:

X2 3600+ Brisbane
Asus M2N-E Mobo
Asus x1950pro 256 PCIE
Seagate 320gb 7200.1 SATA
Kingston Value Ram DDR2 667 - 2 x 1GB and 2 x 512MB
400w Generic PSU that came with this generic black midtower case.

I seem to be having a big problem with my new Asus x1950pro PCIE card. I've tried it out with 6 games total now:

C&C 3 Tiberium Wars Demo
Lord of the Rings Online
FEAR
FarCry

World of Warcraft - This is the only game i can go and play for hours with no problems happening whatsoever.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - actually this game works fine as well.. i just finished playing it for about 3 hours today midnight till 3am (just now)

Basically i'll just describe the problem in detail. I boot up the game and it runs fine..... for about 10 minutes or sometimes even less. While in the middle of the game, no matter what i'm doing - menu screen, loading screen, gameplay - the monitor will suddenly lose signal and flashes to a black screen. I can still hear sound over my speakers for about a good 10 seconds, and then the entire system will then automatically reboot itself.
Upon reentering windows i will get a box that pops up saying that the x1950 display driver had an error and got stuck in an infinite loop trying to rewrite a thread.

Now a couple more details i will add:

1) i've tried using Catalyst 6.12, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4. All these different drivers yielded the same result.

2) i've tried with the system overclocked (10% OC only) and with the system running stock.

3) I've tried playing around with the RAM hoping it would be something up with my RAM. Ran Memtest and everything passed. I've tried removing the two sticks of 512 ram, and let it run at 2gb total. Same result as letting the system run at 3gb's total.

4) this problem has NEVER happened while i've played World of Warcraft. I've already once logged in over 5+ hours at once in WoW and not a single crash. This problem always happens within the first 15 minutes of all the other games i've listed above. (edit: i've also confirmed that this problem doesn't happen during playing Vanguard: saga of heroes. So now it's 2 games that work.. and everything else so far.. doesn't)

5) I'm not sure what kind of power is running through my PSU on the 12V rail.. i'm not really sure what i'm looking for on the sticker, if someone could please tell me.. maybe that's what's causing it to crash.

If this video card were defective... would it not crash for any other game i tried to run on it? Why is it that only WoW will work perfectly and the others not? At first I thought it was a driver issue, but as you can see, i've rolled back to the previous 4 revisions of the Catalyst drivers all with the same result.

I really don't want to have to RMA this card to ASUS (i know it will take forever to get back to me), and so i'm hoping that one of you experts is able to point me in the right direction. I would really appreciate it if someone could give me advice on what to do. Maybe someone else had this exact same problem and found a remedy? I can only hope. I really want to pick up C&C 3, supreme commander and Company of heroes, but i dont' want to spend that money on games if i can't even play them. If worse comes to worse.. it's time for a 8800gts

But anyways, thanks for reading, thank you in advance.

Likely your PSU. Reason it might not be crashing on WoW is because its not as demanding as the other games. When you run higher demanding 3D games it asks more of the video card which then demands more power. If its not able to get that power all sorts of things can go wrong. Check your 12v rails and report back the amps on each or if there is only one. Regardless if it has alot of amps replace it asap because generic PSU's shouldn't be allow to be sold.

Try running the games your having trouble with at much lower settings(low-medium 800x600) and see what happens. If they play fine then it bout has to be the PSU.

thank you guys for the advice, i am buying a 600w OCZ psu on friday, so i will replace that and hope for the best.. if it doesn't fix things, i'm going to have to assume my video card is defective.
I knew this 400w generic psu was no good

I'd say the PSU is the issue, cheap PSU's tend to be complete garbage, just because it says that it's 400w doesn't mean that it's even getting close to it.

I have a few old Codgen 400 watters, that really only have a maximum output of 192w's.

It could be the X1950 Pro overheating VRM issue. Use a utility like Atitool and manually set the fan to run faster and see if you are able to gain stability.

Mate, you are doing exactly the same as me, I bought a 20"LCD and decided to get the powercolour X1950pro 512mb card for my system on a 460w psu, only to find it didnt have enough juice on the 12+v rail....LOL. In the end, I returned the damn card, but kept the new psu.

I reckon I'll stick with nvidia, but have to get a PCIe mobo 1st.

Be careful to get the right psu!

Just spotted this topic. I have exact same problem with my new x1950pro pcie 256, I have a 600w psu but it was a cheap one, so i've ordered a better quality 'Trust' 5550 pro.
Hope it does the trick !
Its annoying after selling my good old 6800gt that got me through STALKER
on very playable settings. :frown:
Will let you know.

I had the same problem. My X1950Pro was overheating. If you use AtiTool, have it try to keep the GPU temp at or below 65C. After doing this my, 5 minutes of "gametime before the computer freaks out" has become unlimited time.

Make sure the power rail is not sharing with other peripherals ...

I have a cheap Tt Active PFC 430 with an 18 amp rail . An isolated line with 2 4 pin molex connected to the cards 6 pin. I have yet to have problems with my asus 1950p

"400w Generic PSU that came with this generic black midtower case. "

That be the most likely problem as others have already said. When you start to play the game the video card starts to draw the power, and if you go poof, crash at about that moment in time, then that is your most likely issue. While it is possible that there is something wrong with the 3D rendering part of the graphics card, or in-proper drivers for the OS, bad DirectX or OpenGL, from your specs, that power supply is almost definitely the problem.

Yeah, but you also probably don't have 4 DIMMs of RAM. Go check out the power usage of that. It is a LOT more then you think (up to 40 WATTS from some DIMMs).

Managed to cure my x1950pro Black screens by changing airflow so a fan is blowing
side on to the card, and with the wonderful ATI Tool setting the card fan to be at
100% by the time the card reaches 50c. Since then no problems, have run a few
3dmk05 benchmarks getting average 8450 , and am playing HL2 ep1 maxed out
and STALKER on medium still tweaking towards high settings.
Before I could n't even run the 3d image in ATI tool without getting a black
screen.
Thankyou ATI Tool

i figured out why ...

Alaska, right? ... low-70sF in the Summer ... 80F is a 'hot' day

you get that nice OC and extra stability with the ice piled all around
-i live in the Desert ... 90F is a "cool" day
