Only the Opterons have went up in price (IIRC). And it definitely wasn't a skyRocket increase. The X2's actually went Down a bit in price. They had to discourage regular desktop users from getting the Opertons instead of the regular consumer cpu's. Rasing the prices will give them the results they want.

While true... I really had my eye on the 165 or at least the 144-146 for my GFs computer...

I may get the x2 3800 but still debating the whole difference between it and the opty 165 for my needs. This whole supply/demand stuff AMD is doing is delaying my purchase. hehe Then again my tax returns arrive soon....

I see absolutely Nothing wrong with the X2's. I have a 3800+ X2 and it runs Perfectly fine at 2.6ghz at stock voltage. Its right up there with the Opteron overclocks. Only real difference is the Cache sizes.

I've seen lots of 3800+ X2's (pretty much all X2 models) get to 2600mhz or more. It may not happen at stock voltage, but a .1 increase in voltage or so usually does it.

Don't think anyone was saying there is something wrong with X2. But, prior to AMD's price decreases on the X2 line, the Opteron was a better value...I believe they were cheaper than the X2 counterpart...plus they're built for server quality.

Well as for researching... The 3800+ x2 w/ a decent aftermarket HSF is indeed a great deal as far as performance goes... The extra 512mb x2 L2 cache serves no real benefit for your gerneral purpose needs...

Yeah but they don't let you return the CPU. Monarch is a better deal.
