Dang! Nice deal. Is this a worthwhile upgrade from my oced A64 3200 @2.5GHz? Also, can I use my stock cooler that's currently on the 3200?

I just picked one up a month or so ago.....running at 2.7 on 1.375vCore......it was a very noticeable upgrade for me on my backup machine. I had a Venice3200@2.6GHz. Yes you can use the stock cooler.

Sweet, thanks. I'm currently running my Venice 3200 @2.5GHz. What do you mainly use your backup machine for? I mainly surf and game on mine. I'm just trying to figure out if I will see a noticeable performance difference.

I went from a single core A64 (Opty 146) @ 2.5ghz to a dual core A64 (Opty 165) @ 2.7ghz... very similar to what you are asking. I surf, game, other minor stuff. Don't expect much of a difference, but it is better for multitasking, no doubt. I primarily bought it for future games... not always a good idea, but 939 can't get that much cheaper as the chips get bought up, so I did it anyway.

People have been getting awesome overclocks on that 3800+. At it's current price, I'd say there is very little reason to get the 165, when the 3800+ overclocks just as well really. When I got my 165, the 3800+ was only $14 less, and the 165 comes with the better HSF worth $10-15, so there I thought it was worth it.

In conclusion, nice and cheap upgrade for a single core 939 system (but again, don't expect a whole lot difference yet, depending what you do), and people have been overclocking them very well.

I use it for a Media Server to the rest of my home (XBMC), a FTP Server, BF2 Server, UT2k4 Server and for Torrents. When I have company it's used as a backup gaming machine for any of the above games. I stress my PC's with many things going at once so I may have seen a bigger difference than you would notice b/c of the amount of apps I run simultaneously.

Besides that, it's just smart future-proofing....Easily add another 1-2 years on an aging box.

Great price for those still on single core processors. I'd definitely jump if i had a 2800-3800+ single core Athlon64 or Opteron. Newer games will take advantage of the extra core and multi-tasking and dvd encoding are much faster.

Opteron series are basically CPUs that pass more thru more stress. I guess the last batches are very nice batches.

One more question. Do you guys think I would benefit more from upgrading my RAM (to 2x1GB PC3200 from 2x512MB PC3200) or getting this cpu? I'm leaning towards the cpu just because DDR prices are sky high and I don't know if I can justify sinking $80-100 into a dying technology.

How many DDR slots are on your board?
I'd add 2 more 512 sticks if you have room.
You can get 2x512 in the FS/T forum pretty cheap ($40).

Do both!

DDR is starting to come down in price. I found this on a quick search of Newegg.
PNY Optima 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit

$55 shipped.

Or you can get A-DATA V-Series 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) for $48 shipped.

Thats what I was thinking too. Though I find this a very yummy deal, I have just bought a used single core a64 for my secondary rig. Dual core is a bit of an overkill for that

I don't see how that gets any lower than what he stated ($80-100). Personally I'd go for the cpu upgrade because ddr2 will eventually come down in price, and it's not a dead end.

You can pick up some Corsair Value 2GB for around $80 on ebay... 1GB for <$45

DDR2 is already cheap but if you can hold off as 939 is still going strong with PCIE. Plus what can't you do with a X2 3800+ than with a Conroe?
