x2 3800+ vs my Opty 144

I just ordered a 3800+ off of NCIX for $215 wish shipping and tax to replace my Opteron 144 which was OC'ed @ 2.4ghz. I was wondering if I would be able to get more out of my new CPU and when I get it I am getting a upgrade for my heatsink also from a Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU to a ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU.

Specs are:

ASRock 939Dual-Sata2
x2 3800+ 7700-CU vs Opteron 144 7000B-ALCU
2x1024mb Mushkin pc4000 CL-3-4-3-8 DDR500
Ultra X-Connect 500 watt
CM Centurion CAC-T05 120 on back 80 on front and 2 80's ont he side
XFX 7900 GT Extreme with AC Silencer 5 REV. 3
Maxtor Diamondmax 200gb 16mb cache

Will I notice any difference in games and will the 3800+ be able to pass my 144 in OCing?

I believe you will have to upgrade the bios to a beta bios to get over 267 "FSB" Asus, asrocks makers, did'nt want thier budget boards competing with their high end boards so they capped it.

Of course how high..well that board only deivers 1.4V so 2.8Ghz if you're lucky.


I would'nt get a new HSF you already got a decent one if you turn fan up to 12V.

No. Not really unless you are doing something in backgraound..like encoding..bitorrenting... then dual core will seem faster.

Well i'm getting the heatsink for free so I am hoping I can OC a bit higher with it.

Is 2.4 the max you achieved with your 144? I thought mine was low at 2.5GHz. You should be able to get higher that that with the 3800+ but then perhaps not with that mobo. A mobo replacement might have been a better upgrade. The 3800+ is a 1.3-1.35v chip so at least you've got a little headroom to raise the vcore compared to the Opty.

Yeah you should be able to go higher on the 144. I got 2.75 GHz out of mine at ~1.46V I believe.

But the 3800+ X2 will be better for most productivity/multitasking. Games really depend on the game, but newer games are starting to take advantage of dual core a bit.

215 for an X2 3800+ God Good man did you get ripped....I just got a X2 4200+ for 186 after tax/shipping from ZZF....
