X2 3800+ w/o IHS?

Sorry - hope someone can help here - google + forum search hasn't turned much up.

I got my used AMD x2 3800+ cpu last night & found that the previous owner had removed the IHS. He sent it to me, but it's no longer attached.

So - while I see that some people have gone without these, I just have the stock hs/fan.
Do I lay the IHS back on there?
Do I use stock hs/fan w/o the IHS?
Or do I need to get a different hs/fan to run on it w/o the IHS?

It depends:

If your not going to overclock then put a layer of thermal paste on and attach the heat sink without the IHS. Boot it up and immediatly check the CPU temp to make sure it's ok. If not, replace the CPU cooler.

If your going to overclock just get a new CPU cooler.

If it was me, I would use a shim "Example" and leave the IHS off. I don't think by laying the IHS on and adding the HSF will be as effective as if it was standard.

Clip-on type heatsinks are supposedly a tad dangerous to use on an A64 CPU with IHS removed. If you have the screw-on type then you're ok as you can carefully balance the amount of pressure on either side of the core as to not crack it. I removed the IHS off my Opteron 165 and have This attached to it (which is coincidentally very cheap and on sale right now) and it runs great.
