Seems inaccurate to me...Are you loading both cores with that 49c load???

Also what mobo are using and with what temperature reading program???

My early on 4400+ did like 29c stock and only loaded to 44c with 2instances of prime running 24 hours....Even oc'd to 2.57ghz with 1.47v I only loaded at 50-51c..

What Zalman are you using??? I was using an XP-90 all copper with 92mm panaflo fan

right!!! Just a very small dab "pea size" in the very center..I even use a tad less....

I suspect the Asus as it has in the past had a very bad temperature reading sensor...

Go look on the asus boards and see if others are having strange temps...

have you flashed to latest bios???

Thats fine temps, what ur ambient temp?
Cause when its summer here i get 38C - 42C idle and 48 - 52C load, ambient is at 35C.
Right now its winter and my temps are 30C idle and 38C load ambient is around 20C.
Case ventilation and ambient temp can make all the difference.

These dual core do run hotter.

Mine never varied thru the season but I have Ac and the room is fairly temp controlled....I see winters of 30f's and summers of mid 90's

Definitely could be an issue if say ambient temp of the room was mid 80's....most rooms AC controlled are 21-23c and my case temps usually run 24-25c...I use ample fans which may not be audibly perferred for many...Howevere it was in my office and I didn't have to sleep in there....

My 4200+ idles at about 40C in 65F degree ambient air. What's wrong with 42C?

You will never be able to idle your cpu temps at anything lower then room temp...it is impossible with air cooling..since you are using that same air to cool it...The best you can likely do is 24c since 75f is 23.88c, and that would more likely be your best case temp...cpu will naturally be a little higher since the temp is measured at the core and you never have perfect thermal transfer of heat thru heatspreader, thermal paste, coppper core, and to fins...

I expect the best you could ever see is a cpu idle of 28-30c....

Is 49C alot? I get 35C with a *nakid* Opty in a SLI Water Cooling Loop when everything is a full load. It pretty much maxes at 35C and even thats pretty rare.

(to get such a high temp in a Water Cooling loop I ran rthdribl along with Prime. That pretty much maxed out everything.

Seems a bit high, given that my X2 4200 at stock 2.2Ghz@1.3v idles at about 36 to 38C with a cheap Tt Venus 7 cooler. Its a relatively small copper heat sink with a smallish fan on it. My load temps are about 50C, with Seti@home running for about 8 hours. According to Windows Task manager, both cores are pegged at 100% with it.

A 'pea' sized amout of AS5 is too much. Don't they recommend about a 'grain of rice' sized amount?

Agreed on a "grain of rice". You'll eventually just learn how much to use after doing so many times. I must have reseated my Video card HS 5x because either I changed HS, went to WC, changed Video Card's.

More experience=more knowing what your doing
