I just bought this processor and installed it on an A8N-E and have been getting high load temps. I am using an XP-120 and fan with arctic silver 5. I must have cleaned, reapplied and reseated the heatsink 10 times. I am not overclocking or overvolting. Room temp is about 20 degrees celcius. Case lid is off. When i startup my PC after being off over night and check the temp with ASUS probe, it is reported at 38 degrees and case temp as 36 degrees. If i run dual instances of prime for 10 min temps reach 53 degrees. Coretemp shows an even higher temp reading. Could these temps be off ?

If your using the stock HSF and an accurate probe, then no those temps sound right.
(oops see you are usng the XP-120, which is the older model, the newer one is the SI-120) That HSF is fine, but will not cool a dual core as well as the newer HSF's, check out this summary page to see that is not up to the same level as the newer generations of HSF's HSF summary link . My Zalman 7000alcu couldnt cut it anymore either hence my purchase of the scythe mine i mention below. I posted my issues in this thread 3800x2 and 4200 x2 thread )

As i found out, people reporting load temps that dont break 50c either have very good cooling, water, or are using an inferior method of measuring the cpu temp.

18c looks like normal swing in temps on a dual core x2 CPU from what i've seen

getting a scythe mine or scythe ninja plus , or a Turniq(sp) tower 120 will prob keep you from breaking 50c but if its stable in prime and your not overclocking you would just be wasting $50+ IMHO. Its not very often unless you do a lot of SMP aware encoding that you are going to stress the CPU to the point that dual priming will. Even in gaming i'd be surprised if it broke 50-51c.

edit - i see you are overclocking... or might be since you did with you sig rig

with my scythe mine 3800 x2 @2.75ghz @1.475 volts i idle at 36-37c and load is at 52c. It may be a bit lower then that as i tested when the HVAC went out in the house.

The rig in my sig is old, i replaced that processor with a 4400+ (everything is at stock right now) I am using a XP120 and getting the temps i reported in my 1st post.

i updated my post above

The summary page i linked was for a toasty 754 cpu @1.7 volts, the first summary page on that review shows a cooling setup we are more in line with.

even with the newer HSF's in the first summary page it looks like maybe a 2-3c drop at best anyway, the xp120 fairs a lot better then my dated zalman 7000alcu did it was in the mid 60's celcius

Well thats kind of disapointing as I would definately like to overclock my chip. I had my 3700+ at 2.6Ghz and it never went over 51 degrees at 1.51V I will try the sock heatsink for fun just to see if i get better temps.

Again, I <3 my Scythe Mine`.

I'm not familar with your particular HSF, and all I can really offer that Dravic hasn't already told you is that you may want to take a look at your cable management / airflow.

That being said, I've run my 3800+ AM2 X2 @ 2.7 GHz for extended periods under load with my Scythe Mine` all inside a Cooler Master Cavalier Aluminum Case (the 120mm rear exhaust fan picks up exactly where the Mine` leaves off...) in somewhere around 24c Ambient and I've only had momentary spikes to 52 or 53c - most of the time they stayed at 49c.

Also, Asus Probe is notorious for jacking up temps. You may want to try another proggy - I use SpeedFan, and I'm sure the other guys around here have their favorites, as well - none of which include Asus Probe...

I also think Asus (Probe) could be the culprit here. My 4400+ running at 2.5GHz (1.39V) with a XP-90 barely touches 50°C dual priming with an ambient temperature of ~24°C. Mobo is a DFI LP NF4 Ultra-D using MBM5 for temp. readout.

The other possibility is an airflow problem.

I don't think its an air flow problem, becuase my case is open (for the time being) and I also have 4 fans in a LianLi case. I will try a few different temp monitoring programs and report back.

I tried speedfan and MBM5 they report the same temps as asus probe. 52 degrees with 2 instances of prime95 running (stock volts and speed), i also tried the stock heatsink and got the same results. So either, the temp probes are inaccurate or this processor generates this much heat.

That processor actually generates that much heat. It's two of your old 3700's, remember. That's pretty decent temps for dual prime, anyway. Unless you're trying to use one of those low rpm fans, 7v modded, I'm guessing that your temps won't rise much even after overclocking. That may not be the best heatsink, but it's still a very good one.

temps are a tad high for that room temp (20C == 68F, pretty cool), but nothing to worry about unless you plan on using the system in 37C (100F) room temps.

Wow, I never realized there was a such a heat disparity in regards between Toledo and Windsor.

Yep, those temps sound pretty reasonable for idle/load, depending on case air flow, and other factors.

I have a Coolermaster Wavemaster, Zalman 7000 cooler, 120mm fan on side panel, 80mm blowhole, 80mm rear, useless 80mm front panel. Get 34 or so idle, 53-55 loaded.

What 4400+ are you running the ADA or the ADV?

I am running mine at 2.6 @ 1.35v with the Ninja and getting 29c idle 35c load (I am running the ADV)

I have the ADA version, was hoping to get the ADV since I just bought it.

Also seems i got a bum overclocker, 1 core errors out at 215 FSB at stock volts.
