I have a few buck to burn and was thinking about ordering the X2 4800 since it's under $300.00. I currently have the X2 4200. Any performance gains? Going from 2.2 - 2.4. Also what is the difference between the X2 4800 F2 stepping ( ADA4800CSBOX) vs E6 ( ADA4800CDBOX) stepping? Also thinking about upgrading my video card from ATI AIW 9800 Pro to ATI AIW X800XT.

Answered my own questio on the stepping. F2 is for Socket AM2, E6 is for Socket 939. Any comments on whether I should upgrade?

You'll see minimal to no performance gain. You could easily overclock your X2 4200 200MHz, and many claim there is no perfromance gain from 512 to 1mb L2 cache.

For $300 buy a new mb with pci-e and a new video card.

You can always do a simple overclock and hit 2.4 to find out. .200 is not going to amaze you with perforance but it is a little more. now if you where coming from a non dual core I would say yes.

I'd say that would be a much, much better investment compared to the CPU upgrade. The 800XT is roughly two times as fast as the 9800.

The most insignificant & unnoticeable upgrade I've ever made was a CPU (P2 300MHz to P3 500MHz).

The most significant & noticeable upgrade ever, you ask? 5400rpm HDD to 7200rpm HDD and then 7200rpm HDD to 15000rpm HDD.

For $300 I might consider looking at a Raptor HDD but anything other than a CPU would be a better investment IMO.

Wow you are young.

The most significant upgrade was when we went from booting off of a 5 1/4 inch floppy to have the OS on a hard drive

Or Monochrome screens to colors

DOS to Windows

Dot Matrix Printers to Inkjets

4800Baud Modems to 19.2 modens for internet access

Token Ring to,,,,,Need to go take some Geritol

Do not get the 4800. Your 4200 is fine, just overclock it.

I would upgrade you'r that video card.

like SGtheArtist said.

I am rinning a 10,000 rpm raptor and out of all the stuff in my rig it was the biggest difference maker.
