I DON'T have the AMD x2 driver installed - didn't know there was one.

I haven't had any issues with any games I've played, and all are fully patched up: BF2, HL2, Highway to the Reich, WW2online, and Hearts of Iron 2.

k, just got home heres and update:

originally, i did not do a fresh install of windows and just swapped from single to dual core. warcraft would fast forward and stuff after playing a few games.

did a fresh install of windows, that worked for regular gameplay. but when i did something like encoding and tried to play, same problem...warcraft would fast forward. keep in mind this is only when im encoding or something while playing...regular playing worked fine.

so that was my temporary fix until i found the winlauncher program i stated in an above post and set affinity. this allowed me to do both encoding and playing w/o problems.

i didnt know there was an x2 patch until recently and didnt bother installing it even tho i found out about it since set affinity worked for me.

but i just installed the x2 patch and now i am encoding a file and watching a replay with out any problems.

conclusion: the x2 patch fixed it for me as well as setting affinity with proggie, but x2 patch much more convenient...for warcraft anyways...

i'd try the patch before the program as duvie recommended.

So would the X2 patch alone fix the problems with encoding or whatever else and gaming at the same time?

Games I run with no problem: BF2, Planetside.
Games I play with issues: EQ2 and EQ. But Set Affinity works on both.

1) specs

4400+ X2, 2GB Crucial RAM, Abi-t AV8 (very early version from June 2004), Leadtech GF 6800GT.

2) whether X2 driver is installed

Installed.

3) nvidia or ati driver used

Forceware 77.30

4) whether you have latest game patches

All games with latest patches

5)whether you hav elatest chipset drivers

Most recent released driver (not beta) for VIA (from the Abit Site)

6) whether changing affnity for process helps or not...

Fixes any problem for me.

I had this weird problem too. I didn't read the whole thread but think I should still contribute.

My specs:
X2 4800+ @ 2.64GHz
2G OCZ Titanium
BFG 7800GTX

When I play WarCraft3, the game became jerky/super fast and basically the game became unplayable. Same thing happened while watching replays, it's like skiping every 10 frams or something. A replay which normally took 5 mins to complete the playback took like less than a minute.

I installed the X2 CPU drivers from the AMD website and the problem is gone.

x2 patch and the launcher prog haven't helped in WoW. If nvidia's beta drivers don't fix it I'll just have to go back to my 3700 and use the 4400 as a work box =(

The two kinds of processor should look more or less identical to the software at the application level, so I'd expect problems to be similar on both platforms. This is just lousy programming; devs should've tested the game on multi-cpu machines when it was first written. To be fair though, the way budgets and deadlines are in the games industry it's easy to see why they wouldn't.

I agree....Like quotes from link above I showed you were a guy wit h a P4 and hT had a similar issue...I think it is related to the OS and how it schedules the threads....

hmmmm interesting, but a dual opterons are actually run in a OS that is set to recognize 2 physical cpus...as afr as I know I though AMDs dual cores are set to be recognized like HT hence why the ability to be run i nthe winxp home version. Perhapos AMD screwed something up and it is not perfetly recognized in all situations properly..Maybe what the cpu driver from AMD is about and maybe it hasn't addressed all of the quirks in the diff apps in cpu recognition...

Well I have tried Half Life 2 and Star wars galaxies so far haven't had any issues. I have the X2 driver installed. Latest Nforce drivers, 71.89 graphics drivers(6600GT @550/1025). I'll install more games and see what happens, but I've had no problems with anything so far.
X2 4200+ @2.475
2x1GB sticks of OCZ
Leadtek 6600GT @550/1025

Nobody mentioned Guild Wars yet. I guess I'll test it out. I'll check back with you guys after August 26/27 since that's when the last hardware arrives. I guess I should subscribe to this thread too. If GW gets mentioned before I post, I'll add my setup and confirm whatever positive or negative result there may be. Later, all.

There isn;t a bottom yet, but at the moment, it looks like if you install the XP AMD driver, you will have no problems. If you run win2k, you need the affinity program.

If this continues, then the bottom line is, no problem with dual-core AMD and games.

Run win xp pro. Haven't installed the AMD driver... will try tonight.

had problem with prince of persia sands of time. Manually setting affinity would not work. There was a task-assigner program that automatically sets affinity for certain programs, and this worked. No more problems.

Far cry bugged out last night. Manually setting the affinity worked.
