X3 8450 or E7200

Hi all, I will be building a PC next month.It will be used for gaming and application development mainly.My brother wants me to get a e7200 but i can get x3 8450 cheaper in my place and i have decided a 4850 for gaming needs.My brother argues that x3 8450 will limit 4850.I will be using 1280x1024 mode for games and in this resolution how much performance difference can i expect between these cpu's.The cost difference is around ~25$.Which cpu is better in the long run?

Most people will tend to recommend the E7200. The 2 cores on the Intel chip are significantly faster, and the 3rd core on the AMD chip won't help it catch up in most games. If you have any intention of overclocking, the gap only gets wider.

At that resolution, the 4850 will have no problem of maxing out anything. If it were me, I would go with the 8450 X3. Here is a good review of the two mentioned processors.

It looks to me that they are mostly equal. I doubt you would even notice a difference between the two at your resolution.

My vote goes for the X3 cpu.

Another review shows the E7200 winning some and the X3 winning some.

Also, in the application development, I imagine that the X3 will help a little more maybe.

both processor would do fine for gaming...

what is application development your referring to?...if the programs youre gonna use takes usage of extra cores then definitely go X3.

In the long run, my guess is the X3 since the future is multi-threading.

If you're planning on overclocking more than 200MHz or so, get the Core 2. Otherwise, it really depends if you feel like going the route "everyone else" went, or being a bit more experimental.

To me, it depends what motherboards you're looking at. If you need specific features (dual gigabit ethernet, firewire, esata, etc.) I'd try to take the extra $25 and invest it in a rock-solid motherboard. I haven't researched AMD motherboards since the Socket 939 days, but I'm sure a little searching could get you some good results.

For gaming, the E7200 would generally come out on top, especially at 1280 x 1024, which is quite a CPU bound res on a HD4850. So your brother was quite right in that respect.

Thanks for the response guys.I wont be overclocking and i use command line gnu tool chain(gcc, make etc).I will find whether these tools are multi-threaded.
