Try to get to 475 and at least bench something, then I'll admit you win. (Sorry, also because I want to know just how much any other board can push).

no luck, it errored out after 12 min at 463x8. I think that it's my mch and not vcore that's getting me...maybe i'll reexamine this after upgrading my case and mobo cooling. for now I just dialed vcore in bios down to 1.35 and rolled it back to 450.

Well, I forgot to drop memory down to 1:1 so I was running it at ddr2 1111. Dropped memory down to 1:1 and upped vcore to 1.39, started 4xprime95 at 463x8 again...I'll watch it for an hour or so and if it's still going let it run overnight.

still no luck, went 75 minutes but still ended up with the same result. 3.6 @ 1.35v in bios is my new home.

So the maximum a P35 board can go to is 3.6 at the moment? (24/7 stable) I don't know... but I think P5K's would do quite well, though...

I was stable at 3.64, I just didn't think it was worth it for 24/7 use if I couldn't get 3.7 stable.

@xoom999, yes an x3350 will work just fine in a 780i mobo. the primary reason that there IS a 780i is that 45nm quads didn't play nice with 680i's.

Yes, indeed. But actually, 780i and 790i boards play quite well with these 45nm quads. I think 475 stable should be expected from these boards. They're like the next best choice after the ASUS P5E-VM HDMI if you are clocking these Q9450/X3350 processors beyond 3.6GHz. (Actually best choice if you have a SLI setup)

Sigh, I was soooo ready to drop the cash on an X3350 and a P5N-T Deluxe some OCZ Reapers, and 2 eVGA 9800 GTX SSC's last night and now newegg is out of the cpu's. :'(

I can do 3.6GHz stable on my P5K @ 1.35v, or I can do 3.56GHz @ 1.275v, the choice is obvious. My P5K did do 475MHz fsb with my E6400 though.

The q6700 is now $260 and the q9450 is $340 (or, is microcenter actually shipping yet?). Is the 30% extra cost really going to translate into 30% extra performance? OK, give the 9450 5% for its extra cache. But with a multiplier of 8 instead of 10, the 9450 will likely end up needing fancier memory, 800Mhz that will go 900, or 1066 memory that costs double. Or a fancier motherboard that safely handles high FSB. The q6700 never got much press or review since it was so overpriced... until they cut the price in half yesterday. I have to ask if it is a better overclocker when all is said and done. Or for that matter a good old fashioned q6600, for $220.

OK this review is fairly on target http://hardwarelogic.com/news/...E/3199/2008-04-18.html

keep checking, they'll get more in stock. or, you can go to tankguys and buy either an x3350 or Q9450 now.

Here's my experience with a Q9450(ES) C0 that I've had to test out for two weeks now.

At first I was using a Scythe Infinity hsf but after a couple of days moved over to my Vapo LS.
This CPU easily did 400x8 with all voltages at stock rock stable. But from there on when I increased the FSB it needed a LOT more voltage to stay stable.
The max FSB I ever got Prime stable was 455MHz but it required 1.603V VTT and 1.71V NB. I ran at those voltages for a couple of days until I read how AT had killed their 9650 from too high VTT.
Lowering the VTT and NB I'm now stable at 440x8 with the voltages you see in my sig and setting GTLs to 75 75 80.

I'm still fine tuning voltages , GTLs and maybe I can get the FSB up a little bit but I'm not holding my breath about it...

I got this chip as a loaner on the condition "Use it until you break it!" and I've thrown a lot of voltage at it but it won't even boot above FSB 460MHz.

So my conclusion is that sub-zero cooling on this chip didn't help one bit. Too limited by FSB and the 8x multiplier.

wow, that's obviously the chip and not the mobo/cooling. I'm on an ip35 pro with a tuniq and easily booted at 463x8 into windows. I'm only at 1.31vtt and 1.52 mch, too.

Just curious, what temps are people seeing across the cores? I feel that mine are a bit high at around 61 61 61 58 load with a TRUE and Scythe S-Flex at 1.26v

That (temperatures above) is at load running Prime 95, @3.2, vcore at load is 1.26, fan is at 1500 RPM

Mine hits 67c on prime95 @ 3.2ghz (no issues), but I have a really shitty CPU cooler, zalman 9700 is on its way.

What I've read suggests that as long as you're under 70c you're OK.

One more question, and maybe someone could test this out for everyone else.

What is the difference in performance between a stock Q9450 and the following (OC'ed to 3.2, 3.4, and 3.6)? I'm not sure if it is worth pumping a ton of extra voltage into my cpu just to get a 1-2% performance increase.

Matt i'm gonna go to the 3.2 ghz oc [DDR2 800 ] when i get mine , as this is the safest, most reliable oc on this chip.. It's almost a natural , & i'm sure the performance gain will be very noticeable.... I think you'll agree it doesn't make a lot of sense to stress a chip that you might want to last for awhile !!
Seems after you get to a certain level of performance ,, it takes a whopping oc to make a lot of difference !!!

For normal tasks and games then the difference might not be noticeable at all. But for CPU-intensive operations, extra clock speeds help a lot. I use a PlayStation 2 emulator for some import games that I can't make to work on my vanilla PlayStation 2 without modding it, and the performance gain from 3.2GHz to 3.8GHz meant 10-20% in most games.

Also with 3.6GHz, 25000 x 13000 pictures in Photoshop will lag to no end. At 3.8GHz, it lags a lot less, though still lagging.

My goal was a stable supcom rig that could use big ass maps and not lag and I got what I came for.

So I have no problem with 3.2Ghz, but runawayprisoner is right, you have to decide what your requirements are and shoot for that.

I wanted to keep my cpu under max rated vcore which is I think 1.25v so I could count on it having a long life, 3.2 was fine 3.4 I needed more vcore than my then current cooler could handle. I dropped 9c going from my old hs/fan to the new one so i could probably get away with 3.4 now but i want to preserve my chip a bit.

Edit: I'm definitely going to try for somewhere between 3.4 - 3.6 now, I did the mods for droop and vcore and benched prime95 for 24 hours @ vcore 1.175 so now I'll be trying to get stable at 3.6 preferably staying under 70c loaded. What would be a good vcore to start with?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but anyone have any experience with the Q9450 + P35-DS3L?
