Question, how are you guys applying the thermal paste onto the processor? Are you following directions like the ones Arctic Cooling puts out, which is a straight line across the processor, or are you doing something different like covering the surface of the heat spreader instead.

My TRUE should be arriving in a few hours

what kind of temps are ya getting with the stock cooler ???

I was thinking of playing with the just in store AMD phenom X4/9850 Black, but i chickened out !! Good Luck AMD

Ol'Pal Gary

They are the tiny little coolers that are like the E3110/E8400/E8500 coolers... except with copper base.

Oh, and as for the TIM appliance, it's kinda simple: just make a cross in the middle, then smash the HSF on, wait for a few seconds... and voila, the HSF sticks in. Since the cores are mostly in the middle, that's the most effective way.

I use the straight line method, it spreads out evenly across the entire CPU quickly no need to spread extra time spreading it out yourself.

I thought that with quads you were supposed to do two lines, one at the 25% line and one at the 75% line?

The instructions they have for AS5 is just one line that goes from left to right. So far its been working for me.

Straight line method - i got about 8C cooler than the first time I did it, which was a drop in the middle. Make sure you put it straight down and move like 1 degree clock and counter clockwise.

Thanks guys. I realized I downloaded an older edition of RealTemps but now it says my CPU is a X3250... Oh boy.

What 1.2v?! No way. I must be doing something wrong. The only reason why I'm pushing it to 1.4 is because prime95 shows errors. It boots up and everything but I just want it to be stable. I get an error in the first 20 seconds in Prime95 when I put the vcore to 1.28v. Any suggestions?

I don't know what you said right now... I have my girlfriend over now, too busy to read much, I am sorry.

OK, I just found the post.... Too busy with the GF to get the extra cycles right now. All boxes stable over 3.2 (except the X3210) !!! Up to 37k PPD in F@H.....

Tweak your other voltages. I can't believe 3.2GHz would require that much? It required like 1.12-1.14v for me.

Hmm I think 3.2 with a 400FSB 8 multi has a FSB hole. I managed to bring it down to 1.2 @ 3.12 ghz. Now it boots up and runs prime95 with no errors so far. Thank you so much! I'm going to fool around a bit more and try for ~3.3ghz or a lower v core.

I guess it's the Core 2 Quad? Or a Core 2 Duo?
I dunno. But in case anyone is interested, the FPO/Batch # of my chip (which can do 3.90GHz easily) is L803B196.
I suppose "96" is almost VERY far away from "00," although someone else claimed that chips close to "00" tend to be the better one.

How are we doing on temperatures? I guess we're having trouble even measuring them. I was thinking about getting an e8400 and found this graph...

Temperature, Voltage, Power

While they went beyond 3.6 to 4.0 and even 4.4 Ghz, looks to me like the safe voltages and temperatures are at 3.6, and above that temperature and voltage go exponential. Where is the sweet spot on the X3350/Q9450?

well, if a 9450 (and xeon equivalent) can run at 3.4 at stock which could according to the mobo be anywhere between 1.15 and 1.225 or so volts, i'd say 3400 is the sweet spot and at this point 3200 to 3400 range seems the most common overclock.

my default is 1.2. That's as far as I've gotten since I've taken this opportunity to load xp pro (instead of xp home) on the system.

btw, I had that stupid c1 error on post again...had to bust out the kingston again...I'm really glad I didn't buy more crucial...this is freakin' ridiculous! It's just about done loading xp pro onto the machine... hopefully this oem disk w/ sp2 still in the wrapper that I found at work is still good Will update once actual oc'ing begins

pps: that tx1 crap that comes with the tuniq sucks. I tried to put some of that on the cpu and it literally flaked off when I tried to spread it around. Fortunately I still have some stg from my trusty zalman... Also, I got some ic7 diamond from the thread in DC and will try that out to compare temps later. My wife is gonna kill me...I see her from saturday night at 10 pm to monday at noon then go to work for 5 1/2 days...oh, well, we all have to sacrifice to achieve stable oc's, HER sacrifice is time with the hubby!

ok, first thing I've noticed is that realtemp and coretemp are 10c off. I'm almost 100% certain that this is due to a different tjmax: it shows as 95c on realtemp and 105c on coretemp.

ok, now I know that it is bc realtemp automatically shows temp and delta to tjmax. both programs show the same delta to tjmax.

What is the real tjmax on these cpus?

ouch fyi, i've been running corsair, mushkin and gskill memory with this processor..all sticks work well..haven't had the chance to really push them hard though given the well under 500 fsb limit

Anyone know what the Q9450 and the EVGA 790i board would run like ?

I was originally going to go with Intel. But then turned to the Phenom 9850. But after reading this thread, I think the EVGA board and the 9450 will be my new setup
