In case anyone wants to do a northbridge volt mod for P5E-VM HDMI, I might just have... discovered one. Will post once I've confirmed that it works. If you want to try it out yourself, measure around the area near the top fan plugs (the power and case fan plugs) to get your real northbridge volt. Should be around 1.242 to 1.271 if you set vNB to 1.25v in BIOS. The place to insert a resistor should be... to the right side of the capacitor with the correct voltage reading.

P.S.: And volt-modding the P5E-VM HDMI a bit (to get 1.73v vNB real) should automatically get you to 500MHz (4GHz) easily... even with 4 sticks of RAM.

well after playing with the asus p5-vm hdmi more, the vdroop started to annoy me since it was so unpredictable. so, i did the vdroop mod with a graphite mechnical pencil and viola, none at all. now i am at 1.08v @ 3.0ghz stable (occt). this is probably going to be my limit, since i wanted to see what i can achieve at the lowest voltage (which this seems to be). keep in mind, this is with a lapped q9450 and hsf, with temps @ 62c full load (not the greatest, but oh well)...

Reading a few posts, looks like you can get 3ghz @ stock voltages. What can I expect with a q9450 with a DFI x48? Is it possible to do 7.5x400=3ghz or 8x400=3.2ghz on stock volts on everything including the NB? The fan used is going to be the Arctic Cooler Freezing Pro 7. My pc should be here this coming week and I'm just pretty excited.

I've been able to do 3.2(400x8) with 1.16 voltage so far, it probably can do it on lower voltage but I haven't had the time to get back to testing. I did have to assign this voltage because if left on auto vcore, even at default 2.66 the vcroe defaulted to 1.2xx so I had to undervolt it on the DFI x48.

I haven't had a chance to see haw far it will go on my DFI board, but this same chip went up to 450 on my old 780i motherboard, so I know it will do at least that. I'm looking at getting one of the Vendetta 2 coolers and selling my Tuniq tower so I may wait until after HSF change.

hard to understand it taking that abuse !!

When i build a 9450 , i'll be content with a 8 X 400 3.2ghz overclock,,, but if they prove a 3.6ghz oc doesn't get to hot & it's reliable.. that would be awsome !!
Wouldn't you guys think he'd have @ least used a P35 , X38 or X48 motherboard !??
Does sound promising if the chips are gonna be golden like the E8400 was & is !!

Two in a row! And it's a new motherboard, too!

batch and voltage@4G?

i have the same batch like runawayprisoner has.

1.21v, 3.6Ghz stable >4 hrs Prime Quad, all voltage set to default (nb/sb/pll/gtl etc)

mobo used: DFI Lanparty DK P35-T2RS

I'm def getting an Intel cpu, i'm leaning towards the Q9450 with that fantastic 12MB of cache.

I couldn't fight off the bug any longer, my E6400 at 3.2ghz is starting to hold me back from properly surfing the web and posting on AT Just got the fedex tracking # on a new X3350, should be playing with it by the weekend.

I'm going to try it out on my current P965 board(P5B-E rev2) and DDR2-800 ram, and if it's too limited I'll upgrade the board and ram. My ram seems to give out around 450mhz, and I lose stability on the E6400 at about 440mhz but this is one of the crappiest E6400's I've seen, it's a real heater even with the TRUE and takes a ton of volts just to get to 3.2 and won't go any higher. I think the mobo is capable of higher FSB as it will do 450 with just a tiny bump in the NBvolts and I have a therrmalright HR-03 on the northbridge and a TRUE 120mm.

I will report my escapades here.

Did you verify that your mobo will play nice with 45nm quads?

Yeah, Asus put out a bios really early on for all the P5B series boards. it doesn't specifically list the xeon parts but it lists Q9XXX and QX9XXX parts so it should work.
And I've seen screenshots on another forum of a P5B-E running a Q9450 at 3.8ghz, and I've seen posts of people running the X3350 on P5B boards. Evidently the bios lists it as a Q9450 but it works just fine.

Way to go prisoner !!

Ol'Pal

Well, let's see here... I had to sand some resistors for an hour because I didn't feel so confident with soldering on that day. Increased the NB voltage by 0.005v, I believe. But it was really worth it.

Stability and stuffs to come later... but I have a feeling I can really stay at 4GHz with less than 1.45v vCore now.

yeah, they're the same chips. well, mostly, I heard on another thread that the x3xxx chips can't enter deep sleep modes. Fortunately for me, seti never sleeps so I don't care

Patience... my coolers and PSUs arrive tomorrow. I'll be sure to take some pics then, and since I sent my graphics card in for a step-up (to the 9800GTX), everything will be on the onboard video. Now 500MHz quad with onboard video should be quite interesting.

My Q9450 finally arrived yesterday so I build my first new desktop system in a few years (have been running laptops for a while). I just changed the bus speed up to 400 for a quick OC to 3.2 with stock voltage on everything and started Prime95 before going to sleep. It ran fine for 9 hours with load temps of 60-63 across the cores (idle around 44-46), and CPU voltage of 1.125 (CoreTemp) or 1.17-1.18 (CPU-Z). Tonight I might try to set the bus speed up to 425 or so with the stock voltage and see if it does fine, but at the moment it's still whisper quiet, which is more important than that last bit of speed.

Yeah, it thankfully booted with no BIOS update (I was worried I'd have to borrow the Pentium4 630 from my work computer to flash it). I didn't see what the BIOS version was, I just flashed it to v16 from a USB stick as soon as it booted fine.

I also used the Thermalright Bolt-Thru kit for the S1283, which seems very sturdy.
