i am hearing that there will be X38's avail in DDR2 but will it be worth it?

thanks...

With real dual x16 PEG slots, upgraded PCIe v2.0 etc it certainly makes a lot more future-proof offer than half-@ssed budget P35 - ATI launched its 2900 Pro which packs 1GB with same ROPs etc as 2900XT under $300 so you can get a pretty serious pixel-pushing 2GB CF config for $600... that's when your better chipset will come handy.
If you try to max out that craptastic Crysis beta (graphics are very nice, gameplay is shit) in 1920 and apply 2xAA w/ 16xAF you must have serious performance there, I can tell you that.

I have say upfront that this launch is turning into a flaming pile of (whatever comes to mind) at this point. Intel has done some masterful schedule executions that last year on CPUs and the P35 chipset, but this release is turning into a hodgepodge of product designs and various release dates, something that has surprised us as this is Intel's flagship chipset release for the next eight months or so.

Except for a couple of X38 boards from Gigabyte and ASUS, the launch this Wednesday is more of a formality than anything. We have several engineering sample boards but we will not be showing results from them as the X38 chipset is at various revision levels and some of the boards have undergone a redesign. We could offer more preview numbers, but some of the boards cannot even be updated with the latest BIOS spins, so, we will skip it.

We will have full retail kit reviews on the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe and Gigabyte GA-X38T-DQ6, both of which underwent significant changes with the BIOS spins just today (so far, much better, especially with 4x1GB configurations and Quad Core overclocking). We have a couple of retail DDR2 boards arriving tomorrow, but will not be able to get those in the launch article, it will be next week unfortunately.

Even the last production X38-DQ6 sample board we have from Gigabyte is slightly different than the retail board showing up in the channels now. It appears right now that a vast majority of X38 designs will not hit the market until late this month. On a side note, we do have both of the ASUS Maximus boards (retail) arriving in a couple of days. We plan on showing results on these boards with everything from high-end water/air to two stage Cascade shortly, so that should be interesting.

Interesting info Gary.. thanks for keeping us informed

I guess Intel's new found embrace of overclocking has them trying to get the X38 perfected properly

Now you really made me curious, hey...!

Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone knows of or expects Intel to come out with a ddr2 version of the Bonetrail? also, has Intel ever put out 2 different versions of their enthusiast boards?

Gary, confirm this benchmark:

http://www.firingsquad.com/har...8_dq6_review/page3.asp

Performance gain under crossfire seems to be 10-20%, in pretty high settings.

I can't believe the benchmark. I honestly think guys like Firing Squad should be more honest and don't lie. I don't know why they inflate the results. Is showing wrong results in order to attract attention for couple of more days before final version beneficial at all??

CURSE FIRING SQUAD!!

It is entirely believable that a Crossfire X38 rig outperforms a Crossfire P35 rig by a wide margin: P35 Crossfire is badly limited by having to run in x16/x4 mode, where X38 is x16/x16.

We are seeing differences (still need to complete HL2-E2 and ET:QW) between the platforms in the lower resolutions at this time but not 20%. I will test Q4 just to see what happens. Prey is about 4% different at 1920x1200. Our article will be up on Monday.
