I have a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R with 6GB of triple channel DDR memory and think good idea to get more memory, or replace the existing memory.

Would it be best to get another set of identical memory (if available) so have 6 sticks, or find 12GB DDR 3 kits?

Affordable DDR3 doesn't seem that common. Any ideas for kit, and availability? (UK)

Triple channel. also think must be standard ram height not with fins- cpu heatsink gets in the way (noctua d14)

The kits Ken linked are triple channel kits.

Also, dual channel works fine on X58. See your motherboard manual page 16. Your motherboard has three memory channels, if you put modules in all three you have triple channel. Put modules in two out of three, you have dual channel.

The only issue with buying a new kit for an old platform is you may run into some compatibility issue, but I think that's unlikely. Any DDR3 kit will probably work okay. EDIT 8GB modules (probably) won't work but 4GB will. 3x4GB or 4x4GB makes the most sense. The G.Skill kit from amazon is good, or this standard height 4x4GB kit for £65.

What would happen if I just fill out all the banks? Keep my OCZ (6gb) then say add 3 x 4GB? It'll just run at the slowest clock speed/cas?

The stuff I have is pretty low latency CAS 2 I think. But it's OCZ so perhaps not truly at that speed. Been getting BSOD but it could just be the GPU not fitting properly (PCI backplate pushes it up a bit when I screw down the scews) May fit piece of plastic between GPU backplate and screws.

You could also buy those generic RAM sticks individually, such as the samsung, but in multiples of 3.

As for your question, it should downclock and loosen timings automatically, just be sure to memtest for stability. Additional Uncore voltage may be required for stability.

This could very well be true, and I would not push it, especially if you are using a 920, which is an earlier chip with an earlier memory controller.

Got a few options

Get this, only have 12GB or have my OCZ + 12GB. Lower speed RAM though

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/12gb-%283x4gb%29-corsair-xms3-ddr3-pc3-10666-%281333%29-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-9-9-9-24-15v

or this (leaving OCZ to make it 12GB)

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/6gb...0-(1600)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-9-9-9-24-165v

or

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/16g...ck-pc3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-9-

Either way, around £50 for new RAM, or about £30 to get 6GB (but then got 6 sticks) I believe it's better to have fewer sticks? (even though board has 6)

I may go for 12GB triple channel kit, keeping the OCZ (loosen timings) and reduce speed to 9-9-9-24

That way have triple channel, in

I do have another computer with DDR3 RAM that has 4GB (2x4GB Corsair 9-9-9-24, 1333mhz)

arse I think that OCZ RAM is 1.65v

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
Recently upgraded that board w/ this ram (3 x 8GB). Bought them individually. Great memory upgrade it was, improved CPU overclock (x5650) as well. What's not to like?

I used the latest (F8b) bios with it, mainly because of the xeon chip, it didn't work as good with earlier versions. It was revision 1.0, by the way. You can check what's available for your board here.

NB. 3 sticks > 1/2/4/5/6 sticks. I'd get rid of that 6gb kit, if I were you. Probably make a set of key chains or something. Literally worthless these days. Or send it to Larry or his friend. They like freebies. Minimum for your platform is 3x4gb, but 3x8gb would be highly recommended.

Have fun.

choccy_bar,

I am pretty confident, that every Kingston DDR3/DDR3L Fury 8GB part will work with that board. Get whatever is cheaper. Technically, they are very much identical. The low voltage stick has just slightly higher timings. The DDR3L memory will be easier to sell later, though.

Crucial Ballistix Tactical also runs great on this board, but I have only tested 4GB modules. I'd get 3 pieces of these, if the price was next to nothing, though. 12 gigs w/ SSD for the pagefile should still be acceptable. Newer games like loads of ram, and if you don't have it, it will move data to your pagefile, leading to unnecessary writes on your SSD. Yeah, 3x8gb would certainly be better, but it also depends for how long you plan to keep using that system. Again, resell value of 8gb sticks is going to be better. The price is very low at the moment. What's not to like?

£76 for 24GB of Hyperx savage 1600mhz CL9 1.5v.
HX316C9SRK2/16 HX316C9SR/8

read no point in getting faster ram for x58

I know 16GB is now plenty however it'll be running in dual channel not triple plus if I want more RAM unlikely to find matching module.

Or if I stick with 6GB DDR3 may shoot up so much or become obselete.

Is £76 for 24GB ok?

read about low voltage, it works but need motherboard to support it. Pretty sure my board allows custom voltage but not sure that's the same as native low voltage 1.35 support (ie set to auto will it drop to 1.35 or set to 1.5v either damage, or get hot) or as long as I go into bios straight away and drop to 1.35 manually not running at auto voltage be ok?

Yep, 1600 is plenty. Your board supports XMP profiles so it will pick up settings automatically. Don't worry about voltage.

Or if I stick with 6GB DDR3 may shoot up so much or become obselete.
6 gigs isn't enough for any kind of decent multi-tasking usage. You may re-use that ram in some other computer or just sell it on Ebay UK, while it's still worth something. Or keep it for backup purposes.

Is £76 for 24GB ok??
Just get it. You will thank yourself later.

Interesting to note, the 1866 ram when dropped to 1600mhz, and have lower timings than native 1600mhz ram.

The prices were excluding VAT...so total £90 or so :-/

This will do 1600 CL9 @ 1.5v no problem. Comes out J81.

The better ram would be Crucial Tactical 1600 CL8 VLP @ 1.35v and it will do CL7 @ 1.5v. No big performance difference to be honest with you, but more expensive. Stick with Ebuyer, they have very good return policy, should something go wrong

It's a Intel 950.

Doing google search a few people have tried 8GB and seem to work.

I remember back when I was still rocking the i7 9XX series I couldn't get 8GB DIMMS to work in my board. A Google search also shows people not getting 8GB DIMMS to work. As long as you researched your actual mobo and got DIMMS known to work on it from other users, then w00t!

You know they make some 6 core Xeons for that socket you have that have much better thermal/TDP. You can get them on eBay for pretty darn cheap. Would future proof you even more as far as CPU goes.
