X79/SB-E and ECC

The X79 platform 'supports' ECC and since the actual memory controller is on the processor, the motherboard shouldn't matter right?

In the past I know there were boards that 'supported' ECC memory in the sense that you could use it, but they wouldn't make use of the ECC functionality.

Is it safe to assume that all X79 motherboard + CPU combinations will actually correct errors when used with ECC memory?

I can find no evidence that my Asus board will work with ECC memory at all, the listed supported sets are all unbuffered. Where did you read that LGA2011 supports ECC because this is the first time I have seen anyone mention it?

The Asus P9X79 manual is slightly strange. It says 'non-ECC, un-buffered memory', yet on the qualification list is

ACTICA ACT1GHU72C8G1333S 1GB SS SAMSUNG K4B1G0846F(ECC)
ACTICA ACT2GHU72D8G1333S 2GB DS SAMSUNG K4B1G0846F(ECC)
ACTICA ACT4GHU72D8H1333H 4GB DS Hynix H5TQ2G83AFR(ECC)
ATP AQ56M72E8BJH9S 2GB DS SAMSUNG K4B1G0846F(ECC)
ATP AQ12M72E8BKH9S 4GB DS SAMSUNG K4B2G0846C(ECC)
etc

the listed supported sets are all unbuffered

yes, it is all unbuffered, whether ECC or not

In the process of comparing some build I options, I ended up stumbling here:

Where Intel makes it pretty clear, that they crippled the 3930K's ECC support. So while it's likely the P9X79 WS, and the DX79SI do have ECC support in the "BIOS". You'll probably need a LGA 2011 Xeon to make use of it, and those may not be released for a while yet.

Intel has required Xeon processors for ECC support for a long time now.

YOU CANNOT USE I7 WITH ECC MEMORY; IT WILL WORK, BUT YOU WON'T HAVE THE ECC FEATURE.

It's possible that the motherboard does not have the BIOS support for ECC memory or it lacks the required traces for ECC.

If the memory controller is on the processor, then ECC support is completely determined by that. As the quote says, Xeon and other server processors are the only ECC capable Intel processors now and since at least a year ago.
