CLEARly the GT.

(if price is close)

EDIT: HOWever, i DID just (this am) get a Radeon 9800 256/256 ("XT") today for $223 shipped from NewEgg . . . after all, the X800 is just a 9800 on steroids.

This is the wrong comparison!
it should be:

X800 XT PE <=> 6800 Ultra *16 pipes
X800 XT <=> 6800 GT *16 pipes, lower clocked
X800 Pro <=> 6800 *12 pipes

By the same token, there is no difference between the GT and the Ultra either except for clock speed.
The PE and X800XT are the same except for clock speed as well.

The GT was targeted to be competition for the X800pro and the Ultra was targeted to be competition for the X800XT. The 6800 12 pipe is to be targeted against the X800SE when that surfaces.

So everything is where it should be. There is really no thinking involved when choosing from the two cards in this poll. Most will choose the GT and only die hards will choose X800pro.
Even though the X800 performs well, I just know that if I bought one, I will feel like I have less of a card because of the 12 pipe deal. With a GT, I will have 16 pipes and no other card has a higher number of pipes than that right now. More pipes HAS to have some advantages over 12 even though I know the architectures are different between the two. My piece.

I still don't think you get it

the ONLY difference between the 'XT' and the 'XT-PE' is the NAME

The GT and the 6900Ultra are DIFFERENT by virtue of their clock speeds.

No it is the right comparison because where I live the x800 pro and 6800 gt will be priced approx the same!

x800 pro = £284
6800 gt = £289

Both of these are the best versions you can get, however you can get a cheaper lower spec version of the x800 pro for £266!

This £266 card
The full retail Sapphire card that is full and retail and not a lower spec card

Available in both FULL Retail and Lite Retail Versions

Full retail indicates that the package contains the entire bundle including the Game software bundle and utilities. The Lite retail versions do not come bundled with the software bundle and are packaged with the neccessities needed to enjoy the pinnacle in performance from Sapphire alone.?

Its the full full card, not even OEM or the like.
And it's £25 cheaper than a GT.

If the XTPE is up against the Ultra, where's the Ultra Extreme go? Personally I can't stand these Ultra++ Extreme Platinum Golden Samples that they thrust out for nothing more than bench fodder...I'll judge the product line by the regular cards not some lucky overclockable set that cost 200 bucks more for a 2% speed increase. Oh and as for pricing, the Pro is up against the GT by MSRP and doesn't really look too good there unless ATi drops the price soon.

Pretty clever isn't it? Set the MSRP at $400 when there's nothing to compete with it... sell a buttload. When competition comes, drop it's price and still outsell the competition because most people would rather save $50 and live with 3% worse performance

So why don't you help me "get it".
Your telling me that the X800XT and PE are the exact same cards core speeds mem speeds down to the last transistor? Why call it a PE then?

I voted for the 6800GT because it clearly outclasses the X800pro, especially considering they are near the same price point, or supposedly will be when things calm down after they have been releasaed for awhile. Ati might as well drop that price big-time on the X800pro, IMHO.

There was a slide early on showing an X800XT and an X800XT PE.

It would make sense for there to be a lower clocked card called just X800XT.

There has been no sign or mention of one however, other than that one slide.

I think ATI will bring it out if they think they need it, but right now an X800XT doesn't appear to be forthcoming.

Hardocp compares the X800 Pro to the 6800 Ultra. The Ultra is actually tested at a lower resolution for many tests. Bottom line is the Pro is within 3 or 4 fps most of the time, but fals lower occasionally. Sounds great for a card $100 less. We can't crown the GT because of one Firingsquad article.

I don't see the point in this 6800 Ultra Extreme when its still slower than the XT in most benchmarks. If the GT can be considered faster than the Pro the XT should be considered that much faster than the Ultra by a similar margin.

You also can't down the GT using one review by a wellknown atifansite!
