As the title says. There's been word around here that the x800xl is coming out in march or possibly april. Or whenever... anyways, I was wondering would this card be the 6800GT's match? Last ATI card I had was a 9600SE and well, it was a decent performer in most games I played.

If SM3.0 matters to you, its the 6800gt no contest. If it doesnt buy whichever one is cheaper, some games will be better with one and some with the other.

ATI stopped making AGP video cards after the X800XT. Meaning the X800XL and the X850XT and everything ATI makes from now on will be PCI-e.

"RADEON® X800 XL and RADEON® X850 XT now available for AGP customers"
Taken straight off ATI's webpage
So ATI WILL be coming out with AGP versions

i prefer SM3.0 and the 6xxx cards...even though i've never used them...but i hope ATI isnt losing the AGP cards, cuz that would suck.

SM 3 doesnt mean shlt and yes it would threaten it as long as the price was 340 or less.

Words to live by.

Of course, as we argue the point, ATI is spending millions trying to develop a SM3 chip, probably because "it doesn't mean shit" and they were looking for a way to waste the millions?

And of course Nvidia is spending millions developing a card that can compete with next gen ATI. Not really if sm3.0 will ever be used, more a case of will the currrent cards be able to properly play these games when they come out? Besides not many are buying agp with thoughts of the future in mind. Buy for todays games and start saving your money for the next greatest. If the agp version of the x800xl comes in under $300, which is what is predicted - than I would say it will be competition.

SM3.0 would have a point if it made a difference and it simply doesn't today, PS 2.0b does everything 3.0 can. For the future there may be a point to it but current games don't show any reason to hang onto PS3.0 as some kind of holy grail. For example, on Riddick using 2.0++/PS3.0 results in such drastic drops in performance that the game becomes pretty much unplayable.

It will all depend on the price. Given that PCIe version is selling for MSRP $299, AGP version shouldn't be much more than that once the supply is decent.

This card's release will be good for consumer regardless if that person is pro-Nvidia or pro-ATI. Competition from X800XL should force lower prices for 6800GT which has held the value crown in the highend segment. It's a win-win situation for us consumers.

There you go Mr. Rollo. I'd rather have a 300 dollar card that performs equally than a 400 dollar card with a feature not even being used in the majority of current games, not to mention the games that do support it become unplayable, ,so I stand by my statement. and everything bar said.

And how would you know how much ATI is spending on what? Stop assuming things without evidence.

By the time SM3 actually means sh!t, your 6xxx cards won't mean sh!t.

Well that would be the case but if you dont like to upgrade every single time a new generation comes out getting a SM3 enabled card right now is probably your best bet. If you are upgrading first thing next gen ATI probably would be your best bet.

You are making no sense. Since when does using SM3 render games unplayable. Please show me a link.

And how would you know how much ATI is spending on what? Stop assuming things without evidence.

And how would you know that he is wrong? He didn't say "ATI is spending $32473200 while Nvidia is spending $89580489". It is speculation, and and simple common sense. Stop trying to bash people for every little thing they say.

As for the original question. The X800XL is a very nice card. THe 6800GT still beats it in speed and features. However the X800XL has a better price performance ratio. If you can justify spending an extra $70 for a couple more frames, and some more features, or if you dont plan on upgrading for a while the GT would be a wiser choice. However for the price you cannot beat the X800XL. If you plan on upgrading soon next gen, go for it. THere really is no bad choice here it is merely deciding which is better for you.

I would have to think X800XL would have to be way below 340 given that 6800Gt is about 15% faster overall and has better features. Also given that 6800GT can overclock to 420/1100 exceeding ultra speeds and x800xl only gets 30mhz on the core, 6800GT overclocked will even further extend the lead between x800xl. I'd say X800XL would have to be below $300 to be competitive.

6800GTs are already at $337.

Wow, where? I've got somebody looking for a 6800 GT in PCIe, but can't find anything under $400.

DOH, I'm in the AGP thread

this card will not be a threat because like every other high end ati card, you cannot buy them unless you buy an alienware computer with it. Its all vaporware
