I remember the price mistake for the BFG 6800GT pre order at Bestbuy for $300.

BFG stepped up to the plate and shipped all of them for that price.

wasn't BFG that "stepped up", it was BestBuy.

This is flase advertising and if ATI decides to drop this deal somebody should sue them. It is a bait and switch in the hope of keeping you from buying Nvidia cards.

I will be contacting better business and whomever else if they screw around with this.

Thank You!!!!

over at Rage3d they say there are a %10 and a %20 and that they are stackable and bring the order total to $213 or something before shipping. That would be a rear deal if you are after a PCI-e card.

OT, but the BBB is about as toothless a tiger as they come. It's a myth that they're such a great consumer advocate, which is unfortunate. I'm sure they once were, but they've changed. The business I worked at used to get calls...for a fee, we could get on their list of "good businesses". When we politely declined, we were told that they'd "received calls about us". We asked if they were good or bad --they couldn't say.

I tried filling out one of their forms a few years back when I had a problem retailer (sent me a Plextor SCSI CD-ROM that was black but with the drive faceplate painted beige and passed it off); they were useless, and a business doesn't have to do anything in response to their calls or letters, either. Plus, if the business is on their "good list" you're less likely to get much help.

I'm not saying people will or won't get their cards. I just hope it doesn't take ATI 4-5 months of a product cycle to get them to them. Right now, I think the whole GPU industry is a farce.

If you do end up having an issue, your state attorney general is always a better choice.

Great deal on an excellent card.

Problem is...something tells me that by far the majority of users do not have PCIe capable boards. A lot of users who would want a $299 card want it to be AGP capable. Why? Well most gamers have realized that A64 is the way to go for gaming and only Intel offered PCIe on 915 and 925 platforms. Chances are a lot of users held out from buying 915/925 chipsets from intel (also knowing 925XE was going to supersede those). Considering low availability of high-end PCIe cards, most users were even more reluctant to convert to PCIe format (and knowing it offers 0 performance benefit). Then combine to these individuals everyone who was waiting to upgrade to the latest generation but didnt want to spend $400-500, and you realize that AGP market is still where it's at regardless of what websites want us to believe. Since when did the market convert to a new technology within <1 year's time? It certainly takes a lot longer than that. My guess is that it'll take until 2006 at best before PCI = AGP (feel free to correct me if i am wrong).

ATI has (had in theory) a real winner on its hands. Imagine getting a card that's maybe 20% slower than X800XT for $200 less? Then you realize that 80%+ of your market is unreachable since you don't have an AGP version. Considering REALto chip is supposed to be available sometime in February and looking at current delays of cards on shelves after the actual product launches, getting an AGP x800XL in March is not the best strategy. By then most users will put all their money aside towards the latest generation like NV47 or R520, knowing that in 3-5 months you can get a card 2x as fast for $300 or even the top of the line cards now for $300 as the fastest cards will replace them. Of course I am assuming that this time, the availability of cards will not take 6 months with the Spring generational launch. Then again, I keep thinking most users who held out for PCIe, wanted it for SLI option if anything, which X800XL doesn't offer either. I mean 6800GT hasn't dropped since it's introduction. (still $380 given $399 MSRP), making it a solid investment all the way back in July. So most users probably already acquired X800Pro/6800GT cards (on the high end) and 6600GT/9800Pro on the lower end. Nothing against ATI, but this card is arriving when things are basically over and a new war is about to start. Most people who wanted a fast card already got them.

Not really. BFG is the one that took it in the shorts. Believe me, Bestbuy would have cancelled orders if BFG had not agreed to sell to them at a lower price.

So how much money can ATI make with this card? They saved die space by switching to .11 micron so they could sell at $300.

Few months at most. There won't be very many new motherboards without PCI-e for anyone who wants a $200+ card as most motherboards except the super cheap budget boards might continue to feature AGP.

True, people who just bought new parts might be SOL, but when these X800XLs are actually available, if you upgrade your entire system at the same time you'll have plenty of PCI-e options for Intel and AMD as in the several weeks between now and when the XL will truly be available we'll have more (practical) nForce 4 options as well as ATI's own xpress 200.

This is done to prevent people from buying nvidia cards. Nothing more. If you pre-order, and have to wait months on end to get it, thats a few months worth of cards that nvidia didn't sell because your waiting on the ATI pre-order. ITS A BIG FAT GIANT STALL. Now picture the thousands and thousands of gamers that pre-ordered this card. Only a very small fraction of these people will actually get the card at this price.

So, you pre-order the card. But are getting impatient. Are you going to cancel? Hell no right? Because if it works out, you'll have a 6800GT equivalent for 100.00 less. Some even 145.00 cheaper if you had a discount code. So you wait, and wait and then, you wait some more and fuming at this point. Like the dude said above, one guy is still waiting for his X800XTPE he pre-ordered six months ago. HES STILL WAITING!!!! Unbelievable.

Will you give in and buy an Nvidia card? No way. Well, after a few months some people will cancel and go green. Marketing strategy at its best. This crap just proves how little ATI cares about its consumers. The only thing they have on their corporate minds is "We Must Stay Ahead Of Nvidia, no matter what".

Pretty sad... Whoa, I have been ranting too much. I'm just getting pissed off at them because most of you folks that pre-ordered or will soon pre-order will be in Silicon Limbo for a long time. And thats not right.

Here is word from Sapphire at CES. This is quoted from the Inquirer. They even have them pictured.

"All together, these cards are in production and thousands of X800 and X800XL cards are coming from the fabs as we speak. X800XL and X800 will surely be the first X800 cards with massive availability that threaten to beat even X800PRO."

Looks like you will have them by next month.

ATI has pulled the preorder of the x800xl off their website
However, they have added:
"RADEON X850 PLATINUM EDITION & RADEON X800XL INSTALL CD"
But, it is temporarily out of stock
Think this could be a positive indicator that it will be released in the near future?

My theory on all this is that ATi got their pants pulled down by Nvidia this generation when NV announced they were doing 16 pipes, as ATi it looks like was planning on 12.

Think about it - X800Pros never had availability problems, but X800XT and XTPEs - ATi's 16 pipers - never really came out. NV on the other hand shipped 6800GTs by the boatload, and 6800Us showed up in a couple months. ATi's XT and XT PE however, you still can't buy, not even now.

To me, from a distance, squinting, it looks like NV planned the 16 pipe jump all along, whereas ATi was moving it up to 12, and tried to counter swiftly by bolting some pipes on to their core. Unfortunately, yields seem to be a problem.

This is all conjecture of course, and I could be completely wrong.

Anyway, the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. ATi is having volume trouble whereas NV - and bear in mind Nvidia's chip has a SIGNIFICANTLY higher transistor count than ATi's - has been shipping in bulk for several months now. Whatever the reason, one company clearly has the advantage at the moment.

I would guess that lack of any pci e competion for the x800xt and pro has left ATI with no need to hurry the x800xl. x800xl was expected to be competition for the 6800gt pci e, but why put out a product that only reduces sales of more expensive Ati cards. I assume that when Nvidia finally releases some upper end cards, ATI will respond. The year of the paper launch continues.........

Insomniak, it's pretty clear that the X800pro is a 16pipe core with 4 pipes shut off, so your theory won't really fly.

They may have had bad yields on the 16pipe cores, resulting in more cores on which only 12 of the pipes worked.

Too late for that now.
