x800xl to 7600gt

I've been researching some midrange cards and the 7600 gt (particuarly the Gigabyte passively cooled one) seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. I'll go SLI for sure, but just not right now. My question: how does a single 7600gt stack up against an X800XL?

My only prereq is WoW and CS: Source maxed out and smooth at 1680x1050, no more, no less, and hopefully on just the single 7600gt. Is this possibile?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I hope this is not out of bounds of answers you are looking for...

It seems to me, judging from the awesome increase in permormance of cards that cost around 250$, that spending even 160$ for a card is a waste.

I'd skip all the X800XL or "800"series video cards since they all lack smartshader 3.0.

My advice? Wait the rest of May for an X1800XT or 7900GT to slip below 250$ on sale with a Promo and/or Rebate.

By the way, two 7600GT in SLI mode don't even match just one of the above 2 better cards in most games.

i have an SLI board so i have to rule out anything ATI. but the 7600gt WOULD be an upgrade right, however marginal? i figure i can go SLI when a new game that captures my interest comes along, but I dont think that'll be anytime too soon.

Yes the 7600GT is abit faster than the X800XL, but not to mindblowing. (Its amazing how a 128bit card is doing so well against 256bit)

That would be one heck of an upgrade from an X800XL.

IF you need a new card to run a game by the time it comes out SLI isn't really a very good upgrade option. Simply because by the time it comes out you could just sell your old card and buy a new one with some more cash that you would have spent on another 7600gt. And with a single card solution you don't have to setup SLI and the problems it has. There maybe a few bugs but I mean most of them should be gone. But in my honest opinion I prefer single card ;-).

If the 7600gt is perhaps only a little faster then the X800XL, does that make the X850XT for $160 or less the faster card for less green?

Generally agree with the above--I never regarded SLI/CF as much of an upgrade path. However, if you do want to go SLI, and you're seriously looking at the passive Gigabyte one, make sure it actually supports SLI... Actually I don't know why I think it wouldn't

Like others said, the 7600gt is only slightly better than an x800xl. Anything less than a 7900 or x1800 and up won't be worth it. I'd skip this generation since you're pretty good to go until DX10. Then again, people upgrade from one $500 card to the next every generation, so it's your decision.

I don't know exactly where the x800XL fits in with nVidia's. But it seems to be comparable to the 6800GT?

I did go ahead and order the $160 KO 7600GT yesterday. I have a 6800NU @ 375/900 16x6x and it should be a very nice upgrade. The 7600GT is 20% to almost 50% faster than a 6800GT. So, I know it will be a nice upgrade for me.

But you need to try and find a review with your card and the 7600GT or see how yours compares to a 6800GT and go to the link below to try and get a ruff estimate. I honestly haven't searched for a x800 comparison.

The KO version is maybe 5% slower than the SuperClocked in that review. So just keep that in mind alittle. You can probably oc to make up for the difference anyways.

Review to 7600GT to a 6800GT

As others have stated, its not a good upgrade. Just not enough difference in performance to justify it. I would suggest at least upgrading to a 7900GT or X1800XT for a more noticeable performance difference.

Edit: Posting in reply to the 6800NU or 6800GT comparison above, yes the X800XL matched the 6800 GT pretty well, until driver updates were released. Now the X800XL pretty much bests it in almost every scenario, in fact the X800XL even bests the 7800GT in Oblivion. Considering the age of the card this is quite impressive imo.

So no its not a good upgrade to a 7600GT, you wont really notice much of any performance increase. Especially in games where it matters most, like Oblivion (The reason most people are considering upgrades these days).

Also OP why are you considering upgrading? Not sure about CS:Source, but WoW ran perfectly smooth at your required reqs on my X800XL, it would seem CS:Source should run perfectly smooth at that res as well on your current card. I may be mistaken on that though as I have not played it in a long time.

I won't ever play Oblvion or FEAR; but a small bump in my current performance, along with a passive cooling and the potential for SLI is making me consider an "upgrade". Also, 7800gt and up require external power.

Ok so you wont play those, but questiion for you? How do you know what you will play in the future. Buying a video card, at least imo, should also be about future gaming. For all we know the next big hit could come out next month but it might not run well on a 7600 GT. Thats one of the reasons many suggest a higher upgrade. Two were talking many times five to ten fps max increase, and other times the X800XL still wins. So when you say a small bump your talking a very small bump unless you do go SLI. Whichever you choose good luck friend.

A 7600GT will able to run those games (WoW and CS source) well on 1680x1050, unless you apply lots of AA/AF.
