I agree with nick. The reason I recommend the X800XL so much is because it is cheaper then the 6800GT. If both were priced the same the 6800GT should be the obvious choice.

I remember reading an anandtech article about it not being a good overclocker but WHY? Is it because ATI reduce the voltage significantly? Maybe if it was volt modded it would work out better.

nick1985 and Kooldrew, why exactly would the gt be the obvious choice if both were priced the same? just because of the shader 3.0 thing? more future proof for games like ut 2007 and fear? Btw im referring to a non-sli comparison (I only plan to use a single card)

By the time games use a noticable amount of SM3.0 instructions...the current generation won't have the power to run the instructions!

PCIe? Get Gigabyte's version because it's passively cooled and hence 100% silent. Trust me, you'll thank me later.

Because the 6800GT edges out the X800XL in the majority of games. They are close in terms of performance, but the 6800GT does have an ever so slight edge. Not to mention a 6800GT an OC to ultra speeds 95% of the time, whereas the X800XL doesnt OC very well at all.

So in short....If he wants to OC a bit and doesn't mind spending the extra money then the 6800GT has it....if not then the X800XL has it!

At the time I bought my x800xl, the 6800GT was $160 more....so the obvious choice was the x800xl. Its a powerful card, I run HF2/CS: S at max resolution, all high and AA/AF on max, and I get very smooth play, same for Far Cry. On BF2 I play at overall high. My only complaint with the x800xl is the no support for sm3.0. But ya like most have said, if equal price the 6800GT is the better choice, but with a $100+ difference...the x800xl is the obvious choice, near equal performance to the 6800GT(sometimes better) and ti runs cooler and draws less power.

I don't think so even if it was equally priced, Nvidia cards have sucky performance in AA/AF try playing agrade A FPS games and turn on that AA/AF all the way on the nvidia card and you will start to see that your perfromance took an absolute nose dive .
Beleive it or not guys I used to have a 6800Ultra that I owned for 28 days and I returned it immediatly and got my self a nice X800XL because the X800XT & PE were at awful availability, so I said to myself I ll get the X800XL untill they get X800XT PE in stock, but for my surprise I had the X800XL for over 3 months now, uI love it, It's silent, low power consumption, very small form factor design compared to my 6800ultra that hits my harddrives right in the back, and requires two molex connectors, and all of that for what SM3.0 BS, SM3.0 is important but by the time it really gets involved in games as sm2.0 is right now, I would have upgraded twice or even three times. I love my VIVO powercolor X800XL .

And for those who were talking about overclocking this badboy, why the hell do you need to overclock it? , I had it for a longtime and neither BF2,CS:S,HL2 ,UT,NFSU2 nor any game that I played at 1280x1024 full AA full AF , and all details, never felt not even a little laggy. and gues what this card well make you drule everytime you play HL2 and especially the upcoming Lost Coast expansion. with the NEW HDR (High Defenition Range)TECHNOLOGY , that will be implemented in HL 2 : Lost Coast . And guess what card is going to be absoulotley ready for it , well you guessed it the X800 series will be capable of doing it all, and with these huge maps maybe Hypermemory by ATi will sstart being useful.

I am not going to leave my X800XL, when crossfire motherboards go cheap I will run this with another one in addition to an IGP and make one hell of a budget gaming machine

Go for the X800Xl and save your money.

''CS:S,HL2 ,UT,NFSU2 nor any game that I played at 1280x1024 full AA full AF , and all details, never felt not even a little laggy.'' That I agree with because I do the same...but BF2? Please...no way in hell you can run those settings you claim and not lag horribly, unless you have 2GB or consider 20fps lagless.

I have the X800XL & love it. You might want to check out your local BB for their current price before you make your final decision. The last 2 times I've been there, the prices have been dropping like crazy. These price drops may apply to both the AGP & PCIe version, I'm not sure. But it's definitely worth looking into before deciding. I love the card & I'm very happy with my decision.

Are you telling me that you have an AMD-643700+, 1 MB cache @2.2GHz), vs my AMD-64 3000+, 512kb cache( @2.25 Ghz (250 x 9) )

But the same graphics card and the same amount of ram ( but my ram is PC-3500)
It could be due to My Raptor and Higer BUS and my system is tweaked in and out all the way till the last possible registry setting. But BF2 never Hiccuped in my sytsem it is as smooth as butter, and I didn't even feel the need to OC my X800XL a tad for BF2, and my settings are full AA and full AF @1280x1024 getting awesome frames .

Check your configurations.

Run at it those settings, and play 32 player map, go into console and type renderer.drawfps 1 and take a few screnshots and post your fps.

If you get a reference X800XL, get an ATi Silencer to go with it, the stock fan is fvcking loud, not to mention the way-too-overdone fan speed control is extremely annoying.
They really should have gone with a 2slot cooler.

Aside from that, I'm happy with mine.

Both are similar performance. They seem to trade wins on various benchmarks at stock speeds. Id get the x800xl just becuase its cheaper.

I have bf2 running on a stock x800xl, p4 2.8g ht, 2g ram. Run 1600x1200 no AA everything on high but shadows and get just a hair under 40 fps most times.

1280x1024 is like buttah.

Seriously if you're having problems getting 20fps with a x800xl at 1280x1024 there is something seriously wrong with your system.

The 6800GT performs slightly better than the X800XL, but the X800XL is a much better bang for your buck.
