The point with the power supply is this: Variance in voltage causes crashes, variances in ampere causes slowdowns. Low quality power supply = voltage variance, high quality power suppply = ampere variance. Your power supply might be of good quality, but its only ratet to give MAX. 13 amperes at the 12 V rail. You might have steady voltage with low ampere. Slowdown. Yor power supply can't feed both your processor and your graphics card. Usually taking out other feeds from the 3 V and 5 V might help (CD-drive, auxilirary disks, floppydisk-drive) can help, but thats dependant upon your power supplys internal configuration. By the by, 3.3X14=46.2, 5X21=105, 12X13=156. Roughly speaking your power supplys max. output is 300 Watts. Half of this on the 12 V rail. Sounds like an upgrade to me.

i downloaded and installed the chipset software installation utility yesterday, but it didnt change anything.
i used to have a lot of system crashes all the time, and it still happens very often. particularly when i had just installed my geforce 6600gt. i couldnt have the computer running more than 10 minutes. i always thought this was maybe my cpu overheating, but it might be the power supply finally. my system crashes often when i change graphics configuration while playing the game too.
i dont really know what an artifact is ahah, but ive been running the scan for 3 minutes now and the temperature has reached 75 degrees. but no errors.
oh and when it crashes, i often have to get back in the bios to put the agp aperture size to 256mb 'cause it resets to 64. but i check that with every startup.

i think ill reformat compleeetely my hard drive, again, and try it. anyway, i have 3 hours left before my next course
if it doesn't work, ill buy a power supply and see if it changes thing. its about time i have a new one anyway.

edit
woah kyniskos, thanks for the clear explanation that's what ill do.

ill go check this out and see the results.
thanks a thousand times all of you for all the help you're amazing!
yaaah

Hopefully this will resolve your problems. I recently bought one of the X850XTs as an upgrade from a 9700 Pro, and it's been great. For what it's worth, I am using a 4-year-old, 340-watt Antec PSU, so the X850XT isn't TOO bad in terms of power usage.

by the way, when you say i should get around 6000 on 3dmark05, what tests and what settings are you using? because i have the free version and the only tests made are game tests and cpu tests. the default configuration is 1024x768, no AA, filtering optimal and fixed framerate off.
is that ok to compare?

I would think that most people probably use the free version and the default settings score is what 3Dmark is always referring to.

Does the X850XT have a power plug? I have seen a similar problem with a 9700 Pro when the power plug was not plugged in but not familiar with the card so cant say. Even if the card does not I know some motherboards have a power plug by the PCI-E slot so you can give the PCI-E slot more power, definatly check that.

Also on the Power Supply issue, it could be a 600 W power supply and still be causing problems. There are several programs, sorry cant think of names, that shows the actual Amps coming out of the power supply if any are in red it could be causing a multitude of problems.

Also is this a totally brand new system? New cpu, memory, etc? If so there could be other culprits. Best thing to do about driver installation is go to your motherboards web site and read the step by step driver install guide about what to install and in what order. May also be in your motherboard.

Good luck on those choices. And even if you do not have Nvidia drivers installed you still need to use driver cleaner to clean out what Ati leaves behind as old drivers can cause issues as well.
