x850XT Issues!

I just bought an A8N-SLI and a Sapphire x850XT. I'm running on a PCP&C 510 Deluxe PSU. I can't get the system to post. I've also got a Prometeia cooling the cpu. When I try to boot, it beeps and tells me on the screen that the Video Card is not connected to the power supply but it is. It came with this adapter:
6 Pin to Single Molex

I've tried with the A8N set for Dual and Single card mode. I've tried both PCI-E slots. I've tried with and without the EZ-power connector in. Any suggestions on how to get this thing to work? Do I need one of the 6 pin to 2 molex adapters instead of the single molex?

Edit: Looking at the pictures of the card, it needs a 6pin PCIe power source, but the adapter you pictured has what you're calling a 1xmolex -> 6pin PCIe adapter. With the X850XT being one of the highest power consuming cards out there, not to mention I'm not even sure if the PCIe standard allows for only 1 molex to feed the 6pin plug, and from the picture it looks like there's only 1 12v line going to the 6pin plug(there should be two), my recommendation is that yes, you need a 2xmolex -> 6pin PCIe adapter.

That's what I"m assuming... but that picture is linked from a hardocp review of the reference x850xt. That is the adapter they used. I need to find a place local that's still open and has an adapter :-/

I would look into a power supply that has the 6-pin connecvtor coming directly from the main harness. This will ensure the card is getting the needed power from a designed circuit and not from another 12-volt rail.

I can't afford a new PSU now. First I found out the board was 24 pin EATX and had to go buy an adapter, now this. Didn't see any of these connections mentioned anywhere before I bought this stuff :-/

You bought a power supply adapter for the MB. I wondering what is the wattage on your power supply. The reason is because your MB uses a little more juice than normal and its an EATX MB and your vid card requires a lot of power also. You are probably not able to supply the needed power. You really do need to upgrade the PSU ASAP to a 24pin W\ 6-pin connector or your system isn't going to be running to its capability anyway.

I believe these connections are mentioned on the boxes for these products. But I could be wrong.

I bought both of these online... And I'm running a PC Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe PSU. This should be plenty of power. According to the A8N Manual, a FX-55 with 4 dimms, 2 6800 GTs, every slot filled, 4 hard drives, optical drive, and some fans should only need 500W... I've got half that.

Did the 6-pin to 1 molex come with it, because I read that a 6-pin to 2 molex came with it. I would try the 6 to 2 if you can. Thats about all I can see. The only times ive had that issue is when I forget to plug in the 6-pin or when the card is bad. Ive never used an adapter either, just a direct rail.

Well, I bought it bulk instead of retail and the 6 pin to 1 pin is what they sent. I'm assuming they sent the wrong adapter.

You could always just pull the pins out of your floppy power connector and plug them into the back of the molex connector. they are small enough to squeeze in there and hold enough to see if beeping stops..

And possibly fry the card

His power supply is one of if not the best PSU on the market (Only Zippy and OCZ challenge it) so we can rule that out.

THe card should only be in the first PCI-E x16 slot, not the second one which is not a full x16 slot. Additionally DO NOT eneable the SLI with that card in there. Why would that have ANY effect whatsoever. Just out of curiosity why did you get an SLI based motherboard but get an ATI card which doesn't have SLI ?

Also you could have two ati cards in one machine, they wont work in sli mode but you will have 4 separate displays.

Yes i know that ATI cards can work in an SLI board and i also know that you can run them so it isn't SLI. However if you get an SLI board it makes SO much more sense to get a card that supports SLI.

And why would you fry the card. Its the same as using a 2 molex adapter. Its a step to see if thats the problem before buying an adapter.

For the same reason you dont jame a whole mess of connectors in 20/24 pin ATX connector. Yes essentially they are they same thing but i HIGHLY doubt it would even make proper contact the entire time.

the adapter is WRONG !
I just saw the SAME problem at rage3d...the sapphire cards ship with an defective power adapter because a pin is missing.

You can get the right cable at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=12-154-001&depa=0

Edit: the middle GND pin is not connected - but the card needs GND on this pin so it knows it has enough power.

Sapphire screwed up big time there shipping those defective adapters !

Edit: if you dont have two left hands you can also mod the connector on the card so it connects the GND pins. But KNOW what you're doing.

+++++++++++ from rage 3d +++++++++++++

The pinout of the cable (the screwy sapphiore adapter) supplied with the card is:

(G) (V)
() ()
() ()

For the card to work the pinout needs to at least be:

(G) (V)
(G) ()
() ()

You could connect the two (G) pins on the card w/ a wire or something.

But...the adapter from newegg is FAR better since it also provides power from two molex which you definitly need since one molex is not enough for this card.

yes of course 2 molex are always better. This adapter (the one they ship with the card) is a joke, not only is it broken (one pin missing which is essential !) but also only draws from ONE molex (which is rated at max. 75W....the card can draw much more than 75W Utter junk adapter....i am glad i got the one from newegg even if i dont have my X850XT PE yet.

so it's only the ground that is the problem? I could rig up something to test it out. If I know exactly what is supposed to be connected where I could use some old fan molexes to wire up something for testing, and buy the adapter if it works.

Could you link me to the thread please?
