Do any of you wake up some mornings and are like yay my new video card comes today. Sure glad I ordered it from newegg. You open the door and there is the hottest chick you have ever seen. And she?s wearing a fedex uniform holding your video card!! As she notices your "undressing glazed-over stare", and saliva dripping down your chin, she begins to throw your package over her shoulder.........

what a b*****!!!! Who wouldn?t drool over new computer stuff? And you always have to plan your opening process, that box maybe come useful.

After a few punches and kicks you feel relived as you pat your new video card.

To make this short story even shorter you grab the package before it leaves her hands. Nothing lost, but so much more to gain! Time to turn up that frag-o-metter with your new video card!!!! yay!!!!!

Or so you thought????.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Hey all, can anyone tell schools started back up? haha any who
I have me two video cards. One sapphire x850xt and one sapphire x1900xt. I can?t tell the difference (in terms of performance) between them! I was so totally pi**ed. In ?world of warcraft? I get 50-60 fps in lagforge. In bg I normally get 70-90. At max settings, @ 1680x1050 using insom's ui mod 1.12, I believe (wow is on its weekly downtime currently ><).

With my x1900xt it?s the same! I forced vsync off (just in case). Defaulted ccc. Next I formatted. Updated drivers and everything else I could find. Still the same. I don?t even notice a difference. ><

And to be honest I really only have time for wow. I mean between working, classes, and wow, sleep is the last thing on my mind, along with something called food.

Any ideas?

Here are my core system specs are-
OCZ Power(something) 700 watt psu
AMD athlon 64 3800@2.4 X2 (dual core)
Geid DDR500@ddr240@2.5-5-5-9 2x512mb
Abit at8 32x (worst board I?ve ever owned)

Well, I would test more games before saying for sure that they perform the same... It might just be being wierd in WoW, but I can't say for sure...

it could just be that WoW graphics arnt stellar in any sense of the word. now i know im gonna get flamed by people saying "well you dont know crap! the cartoony f-ed up graphics of WoW look and feel as life stealing and addicting as the game is itself." ok point for you. However, they are made so that the largest number of people possible can run the game, aka, sucky. Which means that they run the same because the x1900 isnt even challeneged at the very highest settings. hell it could probably run 2 WoW's at the same time and be fine. Try running oblivion at 1280x1024 6xAA 16xAF on the x850 and then the x1900 and then get back to me when ur x850 is left crying on the floor while the x1900 isnt even straining. oh and make sure you enable HDR, woops, forgot the x850 cant even DO hdr (cept on source engines). oh well.

(dont mean to be vicious but dont insult hardware that is obviously better in every way. plus thats my video card ur insultin

Could it be the network lagging WoW. What does your vidcard have to do with that. I just upgraded from the x850xt to a 7900 gtx (which is pretty comparable to the x1900xt) and the difference is phenomenal. Try a different game.

May be you are CPU limited, about the HDR, the HDR used in Source Engine is based in the Microsoft HDR, the other one used in other games like Oblivion is the Open EX HDR, that uses different format blah blah blah. Both are great, but the latter looks a bit better but incurs in a huge performance hit, may be not worthy for the difference.

WoW is hardly a stress test for modern high end cards. Try some games like FEAR or Oblivion - the x1900xt would be about 2x as fast as a x850xt, not to mention with better IQ and features.

As others have said, WoW doesn't really put much stress on the Video card.

I only noticed margainal differences between a Radeon 9700 pro and Geforce 6800 on the same motherboard with the same CPU and 1GB of ram.
When I upped to 2GB of Ram and a faster CPU, I noticed a big difference though.

That being said, I recently got a 24inch widescreen that runs 1920x1200 (compared to my old 27inch that only did 1280x768), and I don't think the 9700pro could handle 1920x1200 with 4x AA like my current X1800XT can.

If WoW is the only game you play, get rid of the x1900xt, keep the 850xt, upgrade to at least 2Gb of ram and get a faster CPU, that is where you'll see a noticable difference.

Thanks a lot for the replies!!!
And sorry for not posting back sooner. School + work + wow = 2 minutes of free time.
><

Onward,

Now you say to try fear and oblivion. I will do that. Any other games you advise on that are out now or will be out? I prefer rts or rpg types. I generally like all others (but sports types. I feel so, ummmm whets the politically correct term for starring at hot sweaty men and force them to do your bidding? >.< gross). I have 2 weeks before I gotta make up my mind to keep or send it back.

Last year of collage I ran out of time, to well do anything, but most importantly, to play most new video games. So I picked one, and that one happened to be wow. Mainly because I have no life. My social time is laughing at alliance trying to win an AV battle (where?s the evil grin button). Just wait until you?re my intern?..muuuwhahahahaah.

Lastly according to your responses wow must be cpu or ram limited? imp running a 2.4 duel core. that?s a beast of a cpu. I could see the ram portion....wow takes up a min of 500mb, usually more like 700 during large raids. Something to look into. Plus is makes since. Change two video cards and have the same performance?duh ><

You've got some other bottlenecks. Single core CPU, only 1GB of RAM... The X1900XT is faster, but you really need to crank the AA and AF to notice.

Duel core cpu, thank you very much. And an over clocked on at that

Ok downloaded the demo for fear.....OMG that game is....like wow. graphically speaking its very intense. very nice! But since I know nothing about benchmarking. I had everything turned up max. 30-40 FPS, with vsync (to much tearing to turn it off). Then I turned off shadows and I hit and would constantly be at 60 fps (vsync). However when ever a battle would start I would immediately drop down to like 10fps and average 20. During the fight.

What does this mean?

PS I have saturday off so hopefully ill go buy oblivion, because they don?t have a demo out. And frankly speaking. I just spend 350 on a card. Time to find out what I can do.

if ur gonna tell us how a game ran and ask us how ur vid card stacks up we need to know what settings u ran the game at hehe FEAR is hell on cards. it is very graphically intensive and it can bring the highest end setup to its knees at the right settings. It would help alot if u had 2 gigs of RAM. on a side note u might want to add X2 to ur proc in ur original post, if u dont say that people will assume its a single core. just wait till u get oblivion. i guarantee once u start running it it will be like nothin you have ever seen. the graphics are simply amazing.

Despite having the 3800x2 I would still say you are cpu bottlenecked. I just moved to an E6400 from a P4-3.06 w/HT and kept my old X850XT and I am seeing improvements across the board in demanding games.

A bigger bottleneck (especially in FEAR) is not having 2GB of RAM.

Ok corrected the orginal post. Man i read that thing 100 times, could have swore i put x2 in there.

so in terms of cpu power-
if clock speed is most important, then the fasted amd chip is a 2.6. Im running a 2.4. Theres not going to be any difference with 200 mhz. So maybe its the cache size. Does having 2mb vs 1mb really help?

In terms of ddr memory-
I was waiting on buy new memory until i went am2. However from all the benchmarks ive seen theres no reason. 939 is faster in msot cases. And "fucture proof" is not enough of an incentive for me to drop 500.

I thank you all for your responces. Many thanks!

I havent ever had a 2mb cache CPU but I have ran 2g of memory and didnt really see any difference bewteen that and 1g. I also run a 2.4 CPU and an X1900XT and still FPS will drop at certain times because of heavy AOE going on in the game in like BWL etc, it may drop but unless its down below 10 FPS my game runs smooth as silk with max settings 4xAA and 16x AF at 1680 res.

probably CPU limited... when i went from a 7600GS to an x850 XT, my HL2 benchmark was still lower than my x800 pro AGP. i forgot i had OC'ed at that point, so i reclocked and got framerates 20% better than the x800pro

I've never had a hot FedEx girl come to the door.

You are a lucky man. At least TRY to invite her in next time.
