Silly rumor? Well you don't really know that do you? There's no rule set in stone that they CANT skip Ivy Bridge - if Haswell is better in every respect why not? Personally I hope they skip IB-E.

Haswell-E will have a DDR4 memory controller. There won't be DDR4 available to purchase in any kind of significant volumes for all of this year. This means that no matter how good Haswell-E is, they cannot skip IVB-E and go straight to it, because the customers would not be able to build working systems.

I was under the impression that DDR4 would not happen until broadwell. In any case, you're diffusing one rumor with another rumor

We don't really know. What i'm saying is, why on earth would anyone WANT IVB-E instead of Haswell E? If they could both be theoretically ready in the same time frame, why not just go with haswell. It's about time that the E and X series of processors weren't 1 generation behind the desktop counterparts - as an enthusiast would jump on Haswell E if it were released this fall. Conversely, IB-E would be more of a long shot - haswell undoubtedly has higher single thread performance. Know what i'm saying? The way things stand now, I will buy Haswell 4770k on release day and would not bother with IVB-E. I know what to expect from IVB-E, there are no surprises whatsoever here....wouldn't Haswell-E be much much more exciting to you?!

Anything is possible, who knows.

Ugh!! H-EP/EN server chips will be DDR4 only. The enthusiast 'E' is derived Intel's sever CPUs and thus wil be DDR4 only as well.

DDR4 is ramping up and not expected to exceed a market penetration of 5% in 2013 (maybe low power embedded?). So it won't be until 2014 for HVM.

Here is a quick overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR4_SDRAM

What I expect from IVB-E is a better IHS TIM (this is for server ops) and availability of an 8 core desktop CPU, and full PCI-E 3.0 support. Impressive in it own right, but if you want Haswell, you can pick up a quad core this year, or wait till next year ( probably 2014H2) to get a the most awesome H-E.

It won't be on the desktop for a while still, but it will be in servers/E-series (which is really just the server chips with a different name) in Haswell. And it's not just a random rumor, various companies are building their schedules around it now.

The really simple answer is still that you cannot actually build a HSW-E system with a decent price until DDR4 is out in volume.

2015 should be the year for DDR4 on the desktop. And faster speeds should be coming out that year after ramping up production for a couple of years.

So .. I am missing the business case here, on the IVB-E.
For the -E it is supposed to come in 6 cores right? 6 cores+ is xeon, right?
Who in their right mind would upgrade SB-E 6 core, to IVB-E 6 core?
No one, right?
That means that Intel is offering IVB-E to those customers that want the -E platform but havent gotten it yet (1+ years later).
It just seems to me, that that market is not that very very big?

I thought I read somewhere that IVB-E will top out at 8-core/16-threads?

I read a rumor today that Intel is now going to skip IB-E and go to Haswell-E and need a new chipset X99 and keep the 2011 pin layout...

Anyone else hear this?

If so that maybe why they are delaying the release until end of year, which I am cool with as I hope it brings power usage down, and many new features, on the CPU as well as the chipset.

I will be looking forward to that build finally.

Thoughts...
You know what i think? They might change the socket layout just a little bit....By adding 2 more pins and calling it socket 2013.That would be really funny !.

I wish they would do something, at least add or subtract a pin. I guess the socket will be keyed in someway with a matching keyed CPU PCB.

Speaking of Haswell Xeons, the quad cores have already been announced (unofficially) for late spring: http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2013/2013032701_Details_of_Xeon_E3-1200_v3_Haswell_processors.html

Supposedly based on a leaked PDF from Intel's website (which was quickly removed but is still cached on Google).

They are barely making any DRAM DDR3 chips right now as it is since PC desktop demand is so low and flash / SSD is gobbling up all of the manufacturing capability for the higher margins.

It's not on Google's cache anymore...wish I had caught it

Ah, bummer. Somebody saved it somewhere, but Intel may have issued a cease and desist order to anyone who published it.
--------------------------------------------------------

Hmm, if the Quad core Haswell Xeons are coming out so soon and taking a look at the server CPU roadmap:

Which show Haswell Xeons coming out in Q214, I wonder if IVB-E(N) will be produced as a short run to fulfill OEM contracts and expectant HEDT users with x79 motherboardsd.

Now add this road map from Xbitlabs: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/di...Performance_Significantly_Specifications.html

And I'm seriously wondering if we could see Haswell-E in Q214?

Ok, that's enough tea leaf reading for me

I want to believe. I probably won't be upgrading my desktop anytime soon, so perhaps Haswell-E might be something for me to look at whenever I do find the funds. My income doesn't permit it right now, and I'd rather spend the money I do have on things like clothes and beer.

It could be that Intel thinks it needs more cores at a lower TDP to fight the likes of Calexa etc. This is the only way this makes sense to me. IVB-EN, etc. could overlap w/Haswell server CPUs, as they would be good candidates for upgrades from SB. Of course, I really don't know what is going to happen.

Like you, I'd like to believe. I would hold out Hawell-E if it was coming out ~ six months after IVB-E instead of 2 years.

WTF I got my rig waiting for Ivy Bridge E 8 core ...... now I hear their not doing Ivy Bridge E. That sux I could have spent 400 dollars on cheapo stuff,, but I was ready for Ivy E ,, just a bios flash and it works,, as far as Christian the Intel guy said. If their skipping then Im stuck with this 3820 ..... If I knew this I would have bought the 6 core then.

I hope there is no truth to this stry and Ivy Bridge E comes out. gl
