I was wondering if there will be an updated physical version of the x99 boards arriving around the same time as the broadwell-e release soonish. Price history shows the x99 classified and the x99 Rampage V extreme are both about a year old, which might mean they're going to release new boards again in march 2016.

Anyone familiar with the release schedule for asus/EVGA boards?

Not sure about ASUS / EVGA but GigaByte has just released a GA-X99P-SLI which has the new Intel Alpine Ridge USB 3.1 controller on it which none of the original X99 boards had when they launched in late 2014. I'd expect a bunch of announcements when the Broadwell-E chips finally hit the market.

Hmm, good tip, thats a nice board, except I really prefer the M.2 port to be far away from the GPUs for heat. The m2 port there means if I sli it will cover the SSD with a very hot thing.

edit: the rampage V x99 EATX is a good example of smart location

It is *rumored* to expect two more refreshed X99 motherboards from EVGA. The X99 Micro 2 is the first and includes the USB type C connection and other updates. I have seen a picture of the X99 FTW K model, which is also a refresh, but nothing official from EVGA yet. FTW K photo shows a LN2 pot mounted on it and several EVGA naked graphics cards placed around the mobo. There is also word of a refreshed X99 Classified K. The K = Killer Nic.

As long as they add the USB 3.1 then it's a worthwhile refresh - just adding a second Killer NIC isn't enough.

There is a new bios update for my mobo I noticed, supporting the new chips. Doubt it would be worth the upgrade though.

I think I am just going to settle adding a USB 3.1 card if needed. My board is just too stable to dump over USB 3.1.

Meh my cheap X99 board I bought last December already has USB 3.1. With 40 PCIe lanes available on the platform adding third party controllers isn't such a big deal compared to running native.

The only thing I would like to see added is the ability to boot off multiple (Striped) m.2 PCIe SSD's like the Z170 is capable of.

You do, but you need 2 or more PCI-e cards for M 2.0 to do so the bios is already there, this is what most refreshes will have oh and fixed USB 3.1 they also will be windows 10 compliant.

USB 3.1+ Windows 10 works fine on my Raider MSI board? No there are several Z170 boards with multiple M.2 PCIe slots that allow for striping PCIe SSD's. This is the only thing missing from X99. You can't just add in several PCie 4x cards and stripe them. Well I guess you could but you wouldn't be able to boot off the array.

This is what I hope is fixed.

I recommend the Asus Strix X99 Gaming to replace the a Rampage V Extreme, because they both gaming boards. I wish there is a Rampage V Extreme refresh.

Is it me - and believe me I don't normally worry about aesthetics with performance items - but are those designs absolutely garish? Ugh. Is it only workstation boards (ASUS X99-e WS) or the EVGA Classified series that get a less flamboyant look?

Those designs are absolutely garish. Their current X99 motherboard lineup is more aesthetically pleasing. This refresh just seems like they took some unified colors and picked whatever designs they had lying around including heatsinks. Their flagship the GA-X99-Designare EX looks horrible in comparison to their current X99 G1 gaming flagship board.
