I've pretty much set my heart on a OC Formula just hanging for it to release already.

The Formula boards have always been well featured mainstream overclocking boards. The Rampage seem to be the best for those using sub zero cooling. Both tend to come out later - I suppose Asus spends more time getting them just right.

Edit: Oh, duh, you were talking about the Asrock Formula
And the Rampage Extreme is already out, but no word on an Asus
Formula yet

Yes after the ASRock X99 OC formula, rumor that it will release this Saturday the 13th in Japan.

As for ASUS and the Rampage Extreme.
Only single M.2 implementation. (Asrock OC Formula dual M.2 x 4 (3.0 and 2.0)
I don't need wifi, (Asrock OC Formula has mPCIe slot so can add your own, more flexible)
I don't need the gimmicky OC Panel, (WTF)
I don't see a future for SATA Express (M.2 is minimum of 2 x better)

For me the Asrock board is the better option, and should be cheaper as not paying for features i will not use.

Yeah, especially since the x99 Rampage Extreme will be ~ $600!!
I'd like one M.2x4 Ultra slot on whatever board I buy, since I plan on keeping it a while. 2x M.2x4s would be nice if they support RAID 0 (although, RAID slows boot times).

My interest in HW-E may wane if we don't start seeing higher overclocks. A 4.2GHz hexacore isn't going to be enough to interest me (even with the IPC boost over my 4.2GHz Gulftown). I may wind up waiting for Skylake instead (for the ST gains from BW+SL).

Decided to go with Asrock Fatal1ty X99X Killer, i5-5820K and 4x4Gb Crucial 2133Mhz.

I chose the motherboard because of the cool name and the respect it will give me.

Joking aside the reasons are:

-dual slot spacing between x16 slots
-Ultra M.2
-Good overclocking
- e-SATA

I could have gone with the Asrock X99 extreme4 as well, but the price difference was less than $35 and for that I got some extra features regarding overclocking, extra USB3.0 ports, extra LAN port and a Fatal1ty USB mouse port

Although the fatal1ty brand is pure marketing, I think the extra features are worth $35.

Solid board you got there bio! I just put together my x99 rampage v and so far I'm impressed with some of the rog extras. That said, I'm not sure if its worth their asking price, but then again its a rog board on the x99 platform. I haven't really messed with overclcking the 5930k yet so I just started out with a basic 4ghz setting. My impression is that these 6 core CPUs will mostly go to the lower 4.3 to 4.5 GHz range on any board with cooling being the big factor.

What cooler are you going with?

I am eager to test the MSI boards soon - I am impressed by what I see in them... I am on the GBT Gaming 5 and I am missing some of the bare minimums in my book - a post led and clear cmos button I know the higher end boards have it but for the price I wish this one had those items

My rating of the big 4 for their X99 motherboards
1st ASRock
Tied for 2nd MSI and ASUS
Last Gigabyte

It's funny, a couple of years ago I would have put Asrock in the bottom, but their quality seems to have improved greatly (or so I hope )

I owned an Asrock extreme 4m, paired it with a i5 2500k. Board was solid, overclocked well, had super fast post / boot time, and ran without an issue for 2 years before I sold it.

One thing that we all must consider is that if you plan on buying an x99 based setup this month, chances are you'll be swapping out the mobo 1-3 years from now. Let's face it, the m2 / sata express market is still too new and bare, and the motherboards available at launch are rev.1 boards. We'll see more mature board offerings over the next 18 months I'm sure. It's the price you pay for getting technology on launch day.

M2 has been working great on my board for 2 months now. The only thing I may swap out is for a 1TB PCIe 3.0 M2 SSD in the future.
