excuse the ignorant question, but on all the spec and pr announcements for all the x99 motherboards, it says "Supports Intel Core i7 and Xeon 18-Core processors"

I kinda never put any thought into because I just assumed you couldnt', but can you drop a Xeon strait into these desktop boards? so confused

if X99 is going to turn out to be like X79, then it will be likely that many/most of the boards will have some support for S2011-3 Xeons.

That being said, you should always check with the motherboard manufacturer to see which CPUs they list as supported

Aside from the lack of overclocking, why isn't this more popular? aren't there some higher core count gems in the Xeon line? Like lower to mid ranged clocks 8 and 10 cores?

1. too expensive (i.e. $2000+)

2. the ~$2000 8-core Xeons available on s2011 would get outperformed by an overclocked 6-core i7, kind of making it pointless for an enthusiast who doesn't need the Xeon features.

3. we don't yet know how s2011-3 Xeons are going to stack up

Currently I'm eying the MSI X99 SLI PLUS, as it seems to have the features I need and not a lot of extra things I don't need.

The few things I want on my board

-M.2 Ultra
-Intel NIC

The things I don't need:

-running more than two video cards
-Killer NIC/Dual NIC
-Good soundcard (I have an external DAC)
-Extreme O/C abilities
-Fancy looks

It's one of the cheaper boards for this reason, so I'm looking forward to some reviews.

Anyone knows if there's a X99 board with two slots between PCIe x16 1 and 2?

Is it just me or are has the launch of the X99 platform been lacking in reviews of motherboards? Also motherboards and memory seems to be the limiting factor when shopping for the platform. Maybe intel did push the release date for the processors forward?

I'm with you bio. What I find lacking is reviews that compare voltage / post timings / other OC load related aspects across multiple boards. The platform's been out 3 weeks and ATOT has yet to do a shootout. Instead, we get R9 285 reviews.

Asrock has the X99M Killer which is MATX.
