Hi, so far i have settled on MEPIS, but wondering about "XANDROS" or " KNOPPIX". Is "MEPIS" still best for the novice?

Try them both. Xandros requires a install on the hard drive. Knoppix is a Live CD. No need to install it.

I initially downloaded Knoppix Live CD to prove myself this Unix should be a crap. But it was just opposite. To begin with, it detected Pixel View TV card on my P4 and I could instantly watch TV programs. It is really great to boot PC without hard disk and be able to dial up and browse Internet. The only bad about Live Ubuntu is it doesn't detect my TV card and doesn't show my Hard Disk even when it is connected.

The MOST valuable thing Live Knoppix comes with is memtest preconfigured at boot prompt. I use memtest more often than Knoppix. I never forget to take my Knoppix CD when I go troubleshoot faultly PCs.

its the best, hands down.

nuh uh!

well out of the ones he listed, at least. which is your favorite?

I don't use live cds, so I have no basis for comparison.

I would be interested to see the tests you performed to come to your objective conclusion though.

I didn't mention BSD. I didn't hint towards BSD. I wasn't even thinking about BSD.

You don't have to mention anything. You mention OBSD just by your presence in a thread.

I actually meant favorite distro. I assume its a flavor of BSD? I was actually thinking of trying out DesktopBSD for maybe the laptop.

Desktop BSD is based on FreeBSD. I'm not a big fan of FreeBSD personally. I don' t really have any quantitative reasons, and I haven't even tried it since 3.something. NetBSD is pretty good, but OpenBSD's setup just feels better to me.

DragonflyBSD is pretty interesting too, but I don't plan on using it until it stabilizes a bit.
