Intel Cans Rockwell Processors for Desktops - Spy-Shot From Intel’s Roadmap.

A spy-shot of a presumable Intel Corp.’s roadmap presentation shows rather dramatic changes in the plans of the world’s largest chipmaker. As it appears, the company has decided to scrap code-named Rockwell chip from its desktop plans, but introduce an enthusiast-oriented version of its code-named Haswell chip already in late 2014 or early 2015. That year Intel also launches its new code-named Skylake micro-architecture.

Wut!?

Are you kidding me? Does Xbitlabs really not know that Rockwell doesn't exist? (never did, it was "yet another" Charlie fabrication)

Broadwell is the successor to Haswell...one would hope something that doesn't exist (and never did) would not find its way onto Intel's roadmaps

Actually it'd be even better if someone at Intel had a sense of humor and redesigned their intenal codename roadmaps around formerly false rumors.

Dang I am going to have to pass that up. I can just see it now, "We are happy to has announced the start of shipping of the Intel® Core™ i9 processors." (Not!)

Why would one semiconductor mfg name one of their chips after a competing company? Rockwell was behind the 65C02, weren't they?

The stupidity of socalled "techsites" today is amazing. It screams for a wish to censor information for this blatant idiocy.

I like being harsh on Charlie, but only because I like him in general for being the artist that he is. Its a tough-love thing.

My real confusion here is with xbitlabs. They turn out quality work, often, but then they have these one-off "articles" like the one here in the OP where you just can't help but scratch your head and wonder what planet the author has been living on these past 2 years

Well done sir! I do believe that you may be the very first company rep which I've ever personally read to so successfully make light of a rumour pertaining to their own company's products.

Kudos!

Editor's day off maybe? :biggrin::whiste:

Honestly AT and SA (though I take a lot more salt with SA) are where I get most of my tech news and speculation nowadays...

From what I can remember, "Rockwell" was the code-name for the chip that was supposed to integrate Larrabee-derived cores. Then Intel cancelled Larrabee for consumer market, which forced change of plans for their CPU lines, and then "Broadwell" was born.

Xbitlabs notwithstanding, Anton Shilov personally doesn't have the best reputation for quality. Or so I hear.

They've been getting a bit worse ocer the last year or so, IMHO. I'm not sure why, but it may just be the need to generate page hits for their advertisers

The “Broadwell” Haswell Refresh Platform will arrive in mid-2014. It will be followed by Haswell-E “Lituya Bay” in late 2014 with the new 14 nm Skylake platform scheduled for a Q2 2015 release.

I don't think Haswell Refresh Platform is Broadwell. Broadwell is definitely 14nm, and the Refresh Platform is listed as 22nm...

I personally think this is an indication that the "Broadwell is BGA only" story may actually be true. Do Broadwell as a mobile only release, and let the desktop keep a slightly tweaked Haswell- a 4780k or something, perhaps. No major loss, if its like the Sandy->Ivy change (which was mainly helpful for mobile anyway).

Well if this roadmap is legit, Kaveri will not have any competition in its price market for the entire 2014.

Intel dosn't care about all niches.
just ask Cyrix, Via or DEC.

Usually it means that profit margins in the niche market is so little, Intel don't care...not that someone is getting the upper hand on Intel.

So Intel will only focus on High-End desktops from now on ?? is that what you saying ??

That's not true, because the predecessor is shown as "Shark Bay" which is the code-name for the Haswell platform in Mobile, not Desktop.

I personally am more interested in whether there is anything after X79. The X79 chipset may look all shiny, but its specs are very disappointing.

On the "Broadwell is BGA only" story, Intel's Daniel Snyder spoke to Maximum PC:

“Intel remains committed to the growing desktop enthusiast and channel markets, and will continue to offer socketed parts in the LGA package for the foreseeable future for our customers and the Enthusiast DIY market. However, Intel cannot comment on specific long-term product roadmap plans at this time, but will disclose more details later per our normal communication process.”

So why does the top of the slide say "[De]sktop Platform Roadmap"?

EDIT: Also, this:

That centre one says "mobile or desktop".

"Socketed parts". Doesn't specify Broadwell at all- and the fact that it doesn't makes me suspicious. They could happily keep selling Haswell in LGA for another year, while selling Broadwell in BGA.

Any followup for x79 will be Haswell-E on a new platform.

And Broadwell is LGA as well.

Oh really? So why is that statement so cagey? Why does it not specify "Broadwell will be LGA"?

Even Anand now believes that Broadwell is BGA only, and saying so.

Haswell GT3e will be available both in notebooks and desktops, however neither will come in socketed form (BGA-only). The desktop parts will carry an R suffix. This will be the beginning of Intel's socketed/soldered strategy on the desktop, which as of now is set to work sort of like tick tock - with the first chips on any new process being sold exclusively in BGA packages. Haswell will have socketed desktop SKUs, Broadwell won't, Skylake will, etc...
