The Hammers memory controller is walking that Nforce2 DC controller. The cpu is amazing.

I dunno ... I have mixed feelings about calling the 1.6ghz Athlon 64 a 2800+ part. Look at those MP3 encoding scores!

And it consistently lags behind the Athlon XP 2800+ in other benches. OTOH, this could be purely due to the lack of optimizations.

Yes, I was refering to both software and hardware (in-the-house) optimizations.

Hmmmm ... i'm liking those UT2003 scores.

Isn't the hammer supposed to debut at 2.00ghz??? are they still having reported problems reaching that speed???

I think if they arrive in the market and are not at least 20% faster then the fastest intel chip I think there delays have truly ruined what could have been a big coup for them....They have waited so long for this and a 3.4ghz p4 w/ 1mb of l2 cache would destroy this thing......

I hope it ramps up and fast!!!

Gaming results are VERY encouraging!!!

This thing needs more cycles, pure and simple.

Wow...starting to get to really look at the scores and the mpeg4 and mp3 scores suck-ass......Maybe the only thing that is wrong at this early stage is once aging amd blows the amd pr rating....

Edit: after slowly getting through the pages I think the 2800+ is well deserved in many apps...multimedia are disappointing though....

At 2ghz and 2.2ghz this thing likely would have won test, but remember this was against a 2.8c p4 and not even a 3.0ghz or soon to be 3.2ghz p4 800fsb chip....And shall we also mention no prescott yet...

Well, but no 64-bit Windows yet either. I wish I could actually get to the benchmark pages to see what SSE2 does for it... do they do any heavy SSE2-enhanced benchies like Lightwave or 3DS?

Yep, mixed bag of results though. Does well in some (b/c of the extra L2 and LL mem controller) and does poorly in others (lack of cycles and poor arithmetic performance).

Server crashed! NOOOOO. THe benchmarks on the CPU I have been waiting 6 months for and now it's delayed! :|

SSE2, sciencemark, 3dmax, and lightwave....the athlon64 is not very exciting and worthy of the 2800+ rating nonetheless....

"Again, it is about too many calculations and Athlon 64 can?t cope with them successfully. By the way, as soon as Intel introduced Hyper-Threading technology support in its Pentium 4 processors, their performance in rendering applications grew up immensely"

Not good IMO....

duvie your opinion is very intel biased....... lets wait until we see some real final silicon reviews before placing any sort of judgement. The fact that it is doing so well at such a low clockspeed and early alpha silicon is pretty amazing in itself.

Oh you don't even know!!! I would so jump on the amd64 bandwagon if it performs....

The facts are....This thing is still not near the speed we were told it was going to be and it appears the rating maybe once again wrong...

Maybe software will help it...I don't know...

However I do have the right to judge it as per this PREVIEW.....As that being said even an AMD fan may be hard to look at this as the shock and awe (you like that???) we were expecting with the hammer...

I usually don't put much stock 3dmark, pcmark, sysmark, and sissoft crap....Howvere the mpeg4, Media encoder 9, mp3, 3dmax, etc test....The test are not showing a great light yet. And....Since I know this is not final silicon but the fact is I have never seen enough of a change (in previews of cpus) to reverse the results of most of these test...

I am insulted by you thinking I am biased and I guess just disregard what I am saying...I have owned both and I run both now....so all \you blind faith amd boys need to start listing to that cause I am far more objective then you. I am a factual and statistical person. I don't live by hype...

Two things.

1) Someone either cache the files and put them up somewhere for us to see or post a summery of the benchies.

2) Slightly off topic but can someone explain why we want a 64bit OS?? What are the benifits?

Thanks.

Come on, you have to be joking me? have you looked at the benchmarks? Obviously this isn't final silicon, we all know that, and we all understand that there are gains to be made. But this chip is getting absolutely BLOWN OUT in a majority of the benchmarks. I seriously doubt they will be able to make up all the ground on the P4 before release, but there's a chance I'll be wrong. As it stands now, calling this chip a 2800+ is a complete joke, and anyone that tries to justify the rating is pretty obviously biased. I hope as much as the next guy that they can release a "true" 3400+ on time (or... on time for this release date)... All anyone wants is a faster box, bottom line. But it's pretty insulting to have this being called a 2800+ the way it stands now

Well, to be fair, if it is a joke, the current Athlon t-bred "2800+" is as well. In the majority of benchmarks, the 1.6 Athlon64 didn't perform all that worse or better than the T-Bred 2.25. Of course, they were comparing it to a 2.8C with HT enabled so both seem like they aren't worth their PR ratings. I suspect the comparison to a 2.8B Northwood without HT would be much more generous for the PR rating.

Its amazing how quickly people forget. Remember when the first scores showed up on the first Athlon. Remember this first review of the Athlon HERE. Well not to long after that the Athlon ruled. As a matter of fact Intel has just really regained control. The architecture of this cpu is radically different. It is technically superior to anything before it and anything that will released in the forseeable future which includes Intel. It might take a few bumps, but I do believe just like the first Athlon, given some time, this cpu will raise the bar.
