I'm thinking of grabbing an xbox so I can use it to steam meadia to the living room (and hope to hell the price drop rumors are true, and come now ). I was wondering if anyone has tried it w/ x264 encoded media w/ aac or ac3 audio. does it do a decent job of playback, or should I just stick to encoding xvid for my stuff?

Gracias

I've been using it for 6 months now, it's really awesome. use a good site to get torrents for tv shows and you'll never have to watch another commercial. I'll PM you a good one if you want.

both of you use it for x264 content? if so.. great to hear.. i'll start ripping my dvds w/ that instead. heh. now only if the $100 xbox rumors are true... makes it easier to buy one w/o having to find one used

Any good links for setting up a XBMC or just xboxscene? I recently bought a Flat panel tv and a laptop and would be nice to streeam stuff to the xbox even though i could use the dvi.

I don't think XBMC can handle x264, not enough horsepower in it. Check xbox-scene.com.

from xbmc's page, they say it supports H.264 and Nero Digital... I too thought it wouldn't be able to decode.. hence why I was asking if anyone had a first hand shot at it. I'll search xboxscene too

it will be a shame too because i just did a comparison and at the lower bitrate x264 is awesome! heh

XBMC for life!
Its the cheapest solution for streaming video content and does a damn good job too.

Suggestions on where to get streams? Anyone know how to get the same streams as pplive or ppstream?

Edit: You people aren't even reading the OP are you? Youre just blabbing that XBMC is great....

it CANT techincally decode it but not at an acceptable framerate (just like it cant do standard HD .ts files.
All in all its the greatest A/V piece of equipment I have ever owned (and I have owned a lot). It's just too underpowered for HD/x264 stuff... even without the HD "support" it still priceless for music, images and DVD images alone (XVID, DIVX< you name it)

now as soon as the 360 gets cracked....

I use it. And LOVE it. It even plays .bin files... amazing. Great for parties with the streaming mp3 playback, or access to online radio stations.

I would honestly pay 3x what I paid for it. It's that good.

I was hoping my assumptions would have been wrong.. but blast. sigh.. back to xvid and more space.. heh

XBMC can't even do full postprocessing on DivX/Xvid, never mind handle H.264.

really? shoot... hrm... damn... maybe I'll have to re-evaluate this.. trying to make something as far below $200 as possible for a media box....

What does this mean? I play DivX/XVid fine. What is "full postprocessing"?

Why xvid? it can play .img files 1:1 (or whatever compression you want) of DVDs
I just toss a DVD in my PC rip it to image on my servers HDs and XBMC can play it flawlessly with menus and everything.

Don't get me wrong I have dozens of XViDs also (mostly the kids movies and TV DVDs for quick easy access.

hm its got a 700mhz cpu right? i've played divx's of all sorts..hr hd whatever on a 650mhz p3 laptop with sh*t graphics chip. btw hrhd is higher than dvd res but yes it wouldn't be able to do .ts..but well thats a freakin high standard to pass for 5 yr old hardware that costs almost nothing. probably most pc's out there can't play a .ts full res 1080i smooth u know.

Homerboy, xvid because well.. I will only have a 300GB raid5 array to work .. and that's not all for media. Gotta save space somehow

0roo0roo.... i'd be encoding at a normal resolution.. it's just the decompression of it that was my concern. I saw that XBMC had h.264 support and it floored me... I didn't think it could do it, but it says it can... so I turned to real world use of it

Huh ... I must be thinking of XBMP ... I know there was some setting in one of the menus that said "postprocessing" and turning it on just made it chug

What does turning it on do? I mean what is it for?

I think your confused.

Why is that, xbmc can plan streams, and I've tried it before, only problem was finding good streams.

I had ppstream setup on xbmc but then pplive came and their streams are much better, just i don't know how to setup it up with xbmc.
