You people seem to forget the PS3 went for $600. That was a decade ago, when $600 was worth more than it is today. Considering the Xbone X is a premium version aimed at hardcore gamers and not the cheaper base model, I can see it working. I think the thing that made the Playstation Pro a bit of a downer is that it couldn't do higher end blu rays at its premium price point that the Xbone Slim was doing for less.
And at the high price it didn't sell well.

When the One S came out I bought the classic for a nicely reduced price. Made me happy.

But yeah I really dont see the point in making incremental upgrades to game consoles. Seems like a recipe for irritating people. My little cousins (who are kinda stupid anyway) honestly thought Microsoft was releasing a NEW console and I had a heck of a time explaining the situation to them.

The only benefit of the S over the original is really the UHD player and HDR games. I don't think that market was big enough to make a real impact. It had a few really good months but I am not sure that the number of users with HDR tvs and would want a game console was high enough when Sony was able to update the original PS4 for hdr.

Playstation 3 also lost its lunch to the Xbox 360 until they dropped the price.

The $600 price point was complained about WAY more than the $500 price point of the Xbox One X

As for Backwards compatibility....Microsoft has said that it is really popular. If it weren't, why would they bother working on OG Xbox compatibility? Or the fact that they are still working on tons of games for Xbox 360.

In addition to what others said there were many people buying the PS3 only as a Blu-Ray player and never purchasing a game for it. Sony took a loss and never made it back from them. This situation is different where the capabilities of the console aren't a selling point. Both the PS4 pro and xb1-x are in the same situation in my view. They really don't do much more than the base console. Maybe a resolution bump or a more stable frame rate. You could argue that some games would look better and sure that is the case in a few titles but in general it's not a groundbreaking upgrade. Games that were 30fps are still 30fps, just more stable.

It's about 1.5%.

Yep more people use media apps than play last gen games on it. The only reason they did it that I can think of is an attempt to have a one up on Sony. Which may or may not have had some effect. I don't have enough information to draw that conclusion.

I have an original PS 3 and a 3 Slim. Bought both during their initial release. Bought one game (GR) but never opened it or played it. I used them simply for Blu-ray playback. The non-Slim had the HDMI port die just out of warranty and I wasn't going to spend $150 for Sony to fix it. As time went buy, BD players got so cheap that the PS3's went collecting dust.

BTW, I will not buy Sony products again.

There were a a couple non slim models that had issues but I had an original PS3 that lasted the whole time until they came out with the slim ones. I eventually got a slim model because my brother dropped the original down the stairs when moving.

I haven't had any issues with sony though and I've had their products occasionally for quite some time.

Sony Bluray players are complete shit in my experience. I've had 2 standalones that have both failed on me. One of them just wouldn't turn on. The other will turn on and stay in the menu but it doesn't respond to anything if you put a disc in. It acts as no disc is in there.

Contrary to that, both my PS3 and PS4 have had no issues with movie playback.

Their Playstation division has a better track record as of late than the consumer electronics division. I will say however that the high end TV lineup from Sony over the last few years has been absolutely stellar albeit expensive compared to the alternatives.

my Xbone has been turned on once in the past year. The PS4 is just so much better IMO and I have the PS4 Pro as well. The only reason I don't sell the XBone is I keep thinking MAYBE they might release a game on it that i want to play that is not on PC or give it to my kids.

This new XBox has great specs and if it was the original release then yeah $500 is fine by me but it is an upgraded machine so $500 is too much. $400 would be the sweet spot but I wouldn't buy it anyway.

Next round of consoles I'm just sticking with Sony. I preferred the PS2, the PS3 and the PS4 over all past xboxes so I'm done buying both systems. Sony has always been the console I prefer.

My xbr 850d does this weird thing where if you turn it off sometimes it turns back on by itself. Not sure if it's related to Android TV or not but it can get quite annoying.

Check your HDMI-CEC settings on all your connected devices. They can send commands to turn the TV on if they are still sending a signal.

BC is one of those features that nobody really gives a shit about but they bitch about it when it's not there. It's always been that way.

The one thing I would like to see is software BC for two generations back and before, like Sony did with the PS3 for PS1 games. I definitely don't want to pay more for a PS4 to have PS3 hardware in it though like they did with launch PS3 having PS2 hardware. Another disadvantage to having BC is you don't get remasters. I loved the remaster of The Last of Us for PS4. Playing that game at 60 fps is amazing. Same with Uncharted 2 & 3 and God of War III. Same with the remaster for Okami on PS3, and I'm excited to play Shadow of the Colossus' PS3 remaster since the PS2 version ran at 20 fps half the time. I hope next generation I can get 60 fps remasters of Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, and Uncharted 4. I would buy those in a second.

Then they'll just stop making new games and just release touched up versions of all the old games and the rest of us would be forced to abandon gaming altogether. There are very, very, very, very few games that should ever be remastered. Most of them will never be, because they have a certain aesthetic on their original hardware. I don't think it's ok to basically say "hey sell me the same game again, just make it prettier this time and maybe smoother too. Yeah I'll buy it!"

I think that all future PS/Xbox consoles will keep x86 architecture and be backwards compatible with the PS4/Xbone.

You're going way too far here, no one is asking Sony to remaster their entire catalog.

I don't mind remasters, just not everything has to be a remaster. Uncharted, last of us, sure. They need to bring new titles to keep new people in the ecosystem.

They talked about the one x and it's specs but specs don't sell to the common consumer. People need to see to believe that they "need" this new console.

I haven't seen anyone ask for any title to be remastered..

I would kill for a 60 fps Bloodborne. If I have a game I really like I'll buy a better version when it comes out. E.g., like when Bayonetta came out on PC. I bought that to play it at a locked 60 fps on PC vs the almost 60 fps but with lots of drops I got playing it on my 360.

I don't like remakes at all though.

Nope they just basically said "hey guys we are releasing upgraded versions of these games, enjoy" then enough people purchased them that it caught on and now it becomes a problem IMO. At first I thought ok, Sony is releasing last of us and some other exclusives because lots of people bought a PS4 and never had a PS3. Thats fair...then Microsoft jumped in with Some titles and then skyrim. I think it's too much now

I'll probably be trading in my original XB1 for the XB1X.

I remember how expensive the Xbox 360 and PS3 were, I'm pretty sure it'll sell just fine but won't be flying off the shelves like the $299 XB1S did.

I mainly play racing games on it (as well as on PC), Project CARS barely gets 40fps on original XB1, supposedly gets closer to 60 on XB1S but hopefully better framerate on the XB1X especially for Project CARS 2 and upcoming GTR 2 and Forza 7.

I think it'll really be down to if it's really that much better in terms of load time and looks. It'll be the same game, but if it load much quicker there will be people like me that'll get it. I really think it's market is to get people that already own one more than getting new buyers. Only time will tell if it's worth it.. If I didn't have the MS Store gift cards I prob would pass on it.. but probably only at first.. I did buy the "elite" version because it loaded a few milliseconds faster with it's hybrid drive.

I bought the Elite for the controller that was sold out everywhere which I sold to my cousin later on but kept the controller.
