When the One S came out I bought the classic for a nicely reduced price. Made me happy.
But yeah I really dont see the point in making incremental upgrades to game consoles. Seems like a recipe for irritating people. My little cousins (who are kinda stupid anyway) honestly thought Microsoft was releasing a NEW console and I had a heck of a time explaining the situation to them.

Playstation 3 also lost its lunch to the Xbox 360 until they dropped the price.

As for Backwards compatibility....Microsoft has said that it is really popular. If it weren't, why would they bother working on OG Xbox compatibility? Or the fact that they are still working on tons of games for Xbox 360.

I have an original PS 3 and a 3 Slim. Bought both during their initial release. Bought one game (GR) but never opened it or played it. I used them simply for Blu-ray playback. The non-Slim had the HDMI port die just out of warranty and I wasn't going to spend $150 for Sony to fix it. As time went buy, BD players got so cheap that the PS3's went collecting dust.In addition to what others said there were many people buying the PS3 only as a Blu-Ray player and never purchasing a game for it. Sony took a loss and never made it back from them. This situation is different where the capabilities of the console aren't a selling point. Both the PS4 pro and xb1-x are in the same situation in my view. They really don't do much more than the base console. Maybe a resolution bump or a more stable frame rate. You could argue that some games would look better and sure that is the case in a few titles but in general it's not a groundbreaking upgrade. Games that were 30fps are still 30fps, just more stable.

Sony Bluray players are complete shit in my experience. I've had 2 standalones that have both failed on me. One of them just wouldn't turn on. The other will turn on and stay in the menu but it doesn't respond to anything if you put a disc in. It acts as no disc is in there.
Contrary to that, both my PS3 and PS4 have had no issues with movie playback.
My xbr 850d does this weird thing where if you turn it off sometimes it turns back on by itself. Not sure if it's related to Android TV or not but it can get quite annoying.Their Playstation division has a better track record as of late than the consumer electronics division. I will say however that the high end TV lineup from Sony over the last few years has been absolutely stellar albeit expensive compared to the alternatives.

BC is one of those features that nobody really gives a shit about but they bitch about it when it's not there. It's always been that way.
The one thing I would like to see is software BC for two generations back and before, like Sony did with the PS3 for PS1 games. I definitely don't want to pay more for a PS4 to have PS3 hardware in it though like they did with launch PS3 having PS2 hardware. Another disadvantage to having BC is you don't get remasters. I loved the remaster of The Last of Us for PS4. Playing that game at 60 fps is amazing. Same with Uncharted 2 & 3 and God of War III. Same with the remaster for Okami on PS3, and I'm excited to play Shadow of the Colossus' PS3 remaster since the PS2 version ran at 20 fps half the time. I hope next generation I can get 60 fps remasters of Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, and Uncharted 4. I would buy those in a second.
Then they'll just stop making new games and just release touched up versions of all the old games and the rest of us would be forced to abandon gaming altogether. There are very, very, very, very few games that should ever be remastered. Most of them will never be, because they have a certain aesthetic on their original hardware. I don't think it's ok to basically say "hey sell me the same game again, just make it prettier this time and maybe smoother too. Yeah I'll buy it!"

I'll probably be trading in my original XB1 for the XB1X.
I remember how expensive the Xbox 360 and PS3 were, I'm pretty sure it'll sell just fine but won't be flying off the shelves like the $299 XB1S did.
I mainly play racing games on it (as well as on PC), Project CARS barely gets 40fps on original XB1, supposedly gets closer to 60 on XB1S but hopefully better framerate on the XB1X especially for Project CARS 2 and upcoming GTR 2 and Forza 7.
I think it'll really be down to if it's really that much better in terms of load time and looks. It'll be the same game, but if it load much quicker there will be people like me that'll get it. I really think it's market is to get people that already own one more than getting new buyers. Only time will tell if it's worth it.. If I didn't have the MS Store gift cards I prob would pass on it.. but probably only at first.. I did buy the "elite" version because it loaded a few milliseconds faster with it's hybrid drive.
