Every panel is different even between two examples of the same model. Their settings may look ok and be close but you can get closer to reference if you do the full calibration. I didn’t calibrate my tv though fwiw.
Yeah, the reason why I wasn't too worried is that I was pretty satisfied with the picture. Although, I was a bit bummed last night when I saw an update for my TV, and when I looked it up, I saw that it didn't include the Dolby Vision upgrade. My Oppo 203 comes tomorrow, and Denon already upgraded the x300 receivers to support Dolby Vision and HLG (the HDR-like format for broadcast TV).
I am tempted to try the calibration on my TCL TV. It's a pretty unfair comparison, but just looking at the TCL TV after using the Sony TV will make you . The backlighting just doesn't seem to dim properly, so you always have that soft glow that makes blacks look more like a dark gray. On the Sony, when I am loading Plex, which has a black background on the loading screen, the black portion looks nearly as dark as the TV does when it's turned off! (Keep in mind that the 55" version of my Sony TV costs like 3x as much as the TCL TV. )
