I just upgraded my 50" Samsung DLP to a 73" Mitsubishi Diamondtron DLP. The 50" Samsung only displayed 720p but, the new TV dislpalys in 1080p.

Everytime I switch to 1080p my xbox goes black... it only displays 1080i or 720p... is this because I'm using output over component cables? My xbox (November 2006 purchase) doesn't have HDMI.

Any solutions for this problem? If it is due to HDMI I may be giving my younger brother my Xbox and upgrading to an elite model with HDMI.

Thanks!

It's possible your TV doesn't support 1080p over component. A lot of TVs don't, unfortunately. However, you don't have to buy a new Xbox to get 1080p. You could use the VGA cable instead.

Also, you don't have to buy an elite to get HDMI. Elites used to have HDMI as an extra feature, but now all Xbox 360s (even the arcade) come with HDMI output.

Are any 360 games true 1080p anyways? I heard every single one is just upscaled from 720p.

The last time I strolled through Best Buy, the HDMI converters for old 360's were down to $50. This would work for you. It will not, however, display HD-DVD movies @ 1080P, only the VGA cable or the HDMI-equipped 360's do that.

Go over to the AVS forum and find the specific thread for your TV. I'm sure someone there can tell you what the inputs on your TV are capable of. It's not uncommon for a set to only accept 1080i over component, or be limited in resolution over VGA (however companies have gotten a lot better and most new generation sets don't have as many quarks). It's stupid, but it's a reality. Before I purchased my samsung 4065F last year, I made damn sure that it could do 1080p over ALL components so that I knew I could connect my xbox via component or VGA without a problem (along with other devices). I also made damn sure that it was HTPC compatible with no quarks.

As far as game resolution, it's not really important. Game developers have to choose between a number of things when they make a game. Higher resolution renders means less stuff going on and a lower frame rate. They have to strike a balance between everything. They DO design the game so that it's scaled well by the 360 (well at least the good developers do). In the end you get games like CoD4 on the 360. Sure... not rendered in 1080p... however you get a VERY solid frame rate and excellent playability (and damn good graphics).

What magical benefit do you think you'll get from "upgrading" to an Elite just to get 1080p?

Maybe avoid scaler lag?

The Elite isn't necessary, but the HDMI port over VGA or component means upscaling DVDs to much better quality right?

None at all. My brother doesn't have an xbox360 so I may give him my old one. Mine is an older one (build 09/2006) that has been to the shop twice for RROD. I figure if I give my brother my old one he'll use it less and still have 1 year of warranty. Every component I have in my living room is black except for my Xbox so I just like the color

The 360 will display HD-DVD's up to 1080i and DVD's at 480P over component. Games are displayed at up to 1080P over component.

BOTH the VGA cable and HDMI-native 360's will display 1080P. From what I've understood, the 360 is ignoring AACS on the VGA connection because for the longest time, the VGA cable was the only way to get 1080P.

So wait a sec. The VGA cable will upscale my DVD's to 1080p?

It'll upscale it to whatever the highest resolution your TV can support. DVD's look 100x better with the VGA cable...best $35 you'll spend for your 360. (Unless you already have the HDMI version)

The answer, as indicated above, is yes, if you have a 1080P TV.

The answer is no. I've yet to see a cable that has the ability to upscale anything. The 360 will upscale the DVD as long as you have it connected with a VGA or HDMI cable. The cable is merely enabling the 360 to do such a thing.

Haha, that gave me a good chuckle at least...

Ok, you guys will have to forgive my lack of knowledge here but I have one more question. I checked the back of my TV last night which is a Sony Bravia XBR4. I was concerned that it did not have a VGA input port. I found one that looks like it and it is labeled as PC In. Does this sound familiar to those with a VGA port on their TV?

Does it look like a VGA port or a DVI port?

VGA. I just double checked last night to make sure it was not a DVI port.

I had a launch 360 starting out and then I upgraded to the Elite when it launched. Love my Elite. Anyhow, I have played both on my 61 inch 720p/1080i set and my new 52 inch 1080p set and let me just say that everything looks so crisp on my 1080p set upscaled over HDMI. I can definitely recommend to you an upgrade to a new pro or Elite with HDMI.

Ok, so now I am confused. I bought the official VGA cable for the 360 and tested it. My test included playing a scene from my X-Men 3 DVD using my old component cables and then playing the same scene using the VGA cable. It looked exactly the same. Why is this the case?
