Supposedly the power brick overheats. Treat it like a computer component and you'll probably be fine, i.e. keep it cool. There is a thread linked somewhere where somebody with overheating problems suspended the power brick or stuck it on the corner of a box so all the sides were exposed and it worked fine.
That's such a kludge, though. You shouldn't have to practically suspend your power brick in the air in order for it to work properly. Plus, if these kinds of measures are necessary to keep the brick cool when the system is brand new, then it doesn't bode well for the long term durability of the system. All that air being sucked into the 360 and the power brick is going to result in some serious dust build up over time, so I wouldn't be shocked to see stories of the 360's dying from dust-bunny induced overheating in six month's time. Also, all that heat in such a small space is going to be hell on the components, which could seriously reduce the lifetime of the console. I'd recommend waiting about six months if possible, just to make sure that this new system doesn't have too many gremlins pop up over time.
I figure that next year is the time to buy, anyway, since hopefully by then all three systems will be out and we will have a chance to see which one is truly the best value overall. A $500 PS3 could wind up being a better value than the 360, once you figure in the extra cost of equipping the 360 with WiFi, a HD DVD drive and a HDMI adapter (to compete with the BluRay, WiFi and HDMI that comes stock on the PS3). Heck, if the PS3 is way over priced and the 360s are prone to heat induced hardware failure, the Revolution (even though it can only handle SD resolutions) might be the best bang for your gaming buck if it comes in at a nice price next Christmas.
There's still a lot of good games available for the first Xbox. I'd recommend holding out and waiting to see what everyone else has to offer before jumping into the next gen market. Otherwise, you're likely to wind up as the proud owner of the next Saturn or 3DO.
