I have an xbox 360 wireless controller with the charge and play USB cable that I plugged into my PC, I downloaded the drivers from MS and the PC can see the controller. However, when I hit the X to turn it on it still just turns on the xbox. How do I use this controller on the PC? control panel sees it in the devices yet the new need for speed game can't detect it.

You need the Wireless USB receiver for it to work on the PC; the charge cable will not allow the controller to be functional....

You can expect excellent compatibility with games in windows for the xbox controller too (makes sense I guess, MS looks out for its own). I have the xbox and logitech rumblepad. I had to ditch the rumblepad due to spotty support in games even though I liked its design better.

I think they also have wired xbox controllers for the PC too, might look at those for maximum responsiveness.

Any wired 360 controller works on the PC. There's no PC specific controller you have to look for, so if you either have one already or can find a used one go for it.

You need the receiver as already indicated. After you get the receiver you will also need to sync the controller to it. You do this by pressing the button on the receiver, and the little button on the front of the controller with the little ))) symbol next to it.

If you only have one controller for the Xbox and PC, you will have to sync it every time you change what you want to use the controller with.

To be clear, the play and charge kit does nothing but charge your controller's battery. A wireless XBOX 360 controller will only transmit its signal wirelessly, regardless of any accessories you have attached. The console itself has wireless recievers built-in, but your PC will need the adapter indicated by people above.

BTW, pretty much this exact same question/thread can be found on page 2 of this forum, as the most recent post was last Thursday...damn, I think that thread was on the 1st page when this one was started /facepalm

I am perplexed why MS has never created some kind of Null driver that comes up and says "the usb data lines are not connected. go buy the wireless receiver here:..."

While it may be useful information, I can just imagine the backlash that it would cause if they actually did that...

The bottom line is that the "play&charge" kit is named "play&charge" because you can play while you charge it (as opposed to a static charger that requires the battery pack to be unplugged from the controller). It doesn't do any more than send electricity to the battery to charge it while the controller is plugged in. I think the only other thing it may do is auto-sync to the XBox it is plugged into -- I seem to recall not having to sync up a controller to my friend's xbox when I used the P&C kit.

The PS3 controller works on the PC using the charge cable, no reason the 360 controller shouldn't. Thanks Microdicks.

Wait...a PS3 controller can work for the PC? Does that mean I can play something like F1 2010 with the PS3 controller?
