Wow...but yes, it sounds like you are definitely a person who should wait for your PS3 and enjoy its 1080p. As for myself and the other lemmings who got in on this deal, however, we will be making do with our poor HD-DVD.

the 360 upscales non 1080p sources (games and standard dvd's), HD-DVD movies are 1080p which does not need upscalling.

I bought a pair of the HD-DVD drives at Beast Buy on Sunday,

You got lucky, they are not in best buy stores yet. I have mine on pre-order with them and they do not ship out till the 16th. I should head down to my local BB and double check, it is currently sold out in most CC's around here.

Makes no difference, the PQ difference is minimal at best.

Okay! I admit when it comes to console I'm a totally noob but when it comes to HD stuffs I'm not so I need a few things that need clarified. Here are my questions:
1) Is this XBOX 360 HD-DVD actually just a HD-DVD transport, not a player?
In other words you need to plug this transport onto the system or XBOX360 console in order to play HD-DVD movies?
2) Where is TV or HDTV display connected to, the transport itself or the console via the 360's component outs?
3) In order to play HD-DVD movies, Do I need to buy both the console and the HD-DVD transport?

Yes, 1080p support was added in a recent XBox Live patch.

Regardless of what is being spewed all over retail stores, 1080p is UTTERLY IRRELEVANT right now, based on the way that 1080p is being recorded and sent to a display. Currently, movies are recorded in 1080p/24. This must be converted to a higher refresh rate to avoid flicker. So even if you have a 1080p display, you aren't receiving true 1080p from the source. (This is even true of Blu-Ray players, which do send 1080p/60 but only by converting 1080p/24 to 1080i/60, then de-interlacing that back to 1080p inside the player. So it's no real advantage).

The very best thing you can do right now is ignore the hype. Neither HD formats give you "true" 1080p, but so what? 1080p/24 converted to ANY quality HD display is beautiful.

1. Correct
2. Connect to the console via Component or VGA
3. Yes you need to buy the console also to play HD-DVD movies.

The Best Buy up the street from me has had 3 of them for about a week, I keep putting off getting in hopes that CC gets a couple and I can use the $40 coupon.

Whether or not the coupon is stackable is beyond me, but it expires the 30th of this month. I had to go to two different stores to find the HD player, but when I got to the cashier they had to manually enter in the coupon and it worked no questions asked. Total came to 169.59. Watched King Kong on our 62" 1080p projection last night, and the picture was gorgeous.

anybody know a way you can convince them to let you get one of these over the phone? my closest circuit city is like 100 miles away, and i really want one of these, but i'd spend more in gas getting there than i'd save.

Are all circuit city stores accepting this coupon? The coupon says No Reproductions/Photocopies will not be accepted...

They're in stock in Santa Rosa and San Rafael, CA. We got ours today in San Rafael without any problems.

Not sure about 'ALL', but seems like majority of the CC are accepting the coupon. I printed mine and it worked without problem. Just try it. Worst case is they turn you down, then try another CC.

Seems like the unit is pretty much available to everyone without problem. Just checked on CC's site, and all 10 of the CC in my area have them in-stock.

I went to CC to give it a shot and it worked. It did not scan but worked when keyed in manually.

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement!

Nice find! Printing the PDF that was posted will work? Is there a higher rez version that won't be as suspicious? I'd just like to know why I didn't get those coups!

Is anyone renting out HDDVD movies yet? This thing may be worth it if you are able to rent out media for it.

Netflix is renting the movies. Has anyone here successfully watched a movie from their PC using this drive yet? Any links to additional info for hooking to the PC would be great. Nice deal OP especially if this works with the PC.
