My old 2004 Xbox 360 finally bit the dust. I bought a new 250Gb one off kijiji but am having an issue with my live account. I do not have the password and the MS recovery process is long and tedious... took them 9 days to even answer and it was obvious they hadn't even read my issue.

I had an idea last night which I should have had much earlier. Can I just remove the 250Gb drive and put in my 20Gb and it would work in the new xbox? That would then allow me to change the password on the account so I could swap back to the 250Gb and use it.

Would that work? I'm on vacation and would love to get back into New Vegas!!!

Edit: I know you can swap them, I am asking because I don't know if there is a difference in the 2004 and 2010 consoles. It does not look like it but I'd rather confirm than break something!

Thanks and happy holidays

Yes you can. I just opened up the case for my old 20GB and dropped it down into my new 4GB slim model xbox. There are plenty of youtube videos to show you how it works. Basically the inside of the new xbox has standards sata connections, so the hard drive just slides down into the connectors.

Then what you can do is transfer everything off of your 20GB to a thumbdrive or usb hard drive. Then pop your 250GB drive back in and put everything on there. Saves you the hassle of buying that $20 transfer kit.

Thanks Boobs. I tried and the drive does work but MS was stupid enough to request the Live password to do anything! I am not going to bother copying the data so waiting to have access to account to re-download and start my games again...

Close to 2 weeks now since I requested a password since I don't have it... this is probably the slowest customer service I have EVER experienced from any company. Makes me consider just selling the xbox and gaming on the ps3, they might have better customer service than Microsoft.

Oh really? I thought the new slim ones wouldn't take an older HD - good to know!

They do, but you have to take the bare drive out of the old style HDD tray. This also means that when installed into the new Slim, it just kinda hangs there. Most how-to videos recommend taking the black insulating feet from the Slim packaging to help support the bare drive.

I just got a slim and will be taking the HD out of my original launch day 360. I guess I can just put the drive in the new one and all is fine? How about profiles? This is for my wife and her profile is stored on a 360 memory card. I can find nowhere to actually plug the card in so I guess I have to get the old one going again, transfer the profile to the HD, THEN put that HD into the new slim?

Not to threadjack, but I got a 4GB Slim today, and want to put my old 20GB drive in. I've heard that you can be banned from Live for using a 20GB drive in the Slim models. I doubt it, but I want to be sure, does anyone know?

Thats exactly what I did and I haven't had any problems. I doubt they would ban someone for using your xbox 360 hard drive in your xbox 360. Thats how I see it at least.
