Dude, it's less than $4/month for xbox live.

If you're too cheap to pay that then you shouldnt even be buying games.

I don't care if it was $1 a month. If one company offers it free and the other charges, why am I going to prefer paying over free? Yes Xbox Live is better right now but I don't care of some of the extra features of Xbox Live. I have a life outside of gaming. I don't need to be some super famous ranked person and I don't need to be interrupted everytime I am watching a movie to let me know a friend signed on or challenges me to a game.

Because the one that costs money blows the free one out of the water?

I hadn't owned a console since the days of intellivision / atari. I bought an X-box 360 and love it... don't care for my brothers PS3 too much.

More games
Cheaper
Better online
I like US games more than Japanese?

I have a PS3 and love it. I can't say much on the 360, but I do express that my PS3 satisfies me greatly.

Advantages:
Free online (parents would object to even 50 cents a month, I have no continuous flow of money yet).
Great games (Resistance, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, MGS4, DMC4, Killzone 3, Unreal Tournament III with mouse/keyboard support to name a few).
Linux (this became extremely useful yesterday when I was cloning my primary HDD).
Stylish (not a primary reason, but this thing looks pretty, and the XMB is hot).
No heat/freezing (I recieved my PS3 five days after launch, and it has only frozen on me 2 times).
Blu-Ray Drive (this also became pretty useful after we just recently purchased a 32" HDTV a few weeks ago).
Home (looks very, very promising as an online feature).
Touch-sensitive buttons! (haha, this was just worth noting, it's awesome! )

Disadvantages:
Online (supposedly it's not equivalent to Live, but PSN is still in pretty early stages, and Home still hasn't launched yet).
Launch games (they really sucked, but the arsenal is growing with titles like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, MGS, and other games mentioned above).
It's Big (not much of a problem for me, just thought I'd note though).
No DVD Upconverter (although, this was announced by Phil Harrison as a feature to come in a future Firmware upgrade).
No Game Upscaling (yes, PS2 games look still equally bad on an HDTV).

I'm loving it, though. And the games to come are literally orgasmic.

And yes I know DMC4 and UT III are multiplatform.

You do realize you can turn off the notifications when watching movies, right?

360

I have all 3 systems (including Wii) and the 360 is the greatest console I've ever owned....seriously. If you're really interested, I'll post the pros/cons of each system, but trust me....it's no real competition.

FYI, you can turn the notifications off.

I love xbox live, I've seen the crappy excuse for an online service that PS3 has and it makes me happy to send MS that $4/month knowing that for once MS actually delivered a service that was worth the money they charge.

Well, I'm looking forward to quite a bit of XBOX 360 games, but you need to mention what kind of games you like, because what I like doesn't mean crap .

FPS, RPGs, driving games and GTA type games. Stuff that doesnt make it to the PC.

Xbox360 hands down...

FPS: Rainbow Six: Vegas, Halo3, Ghost Recon: Armored Warrior 1/2, Gears of War (3rd person but plays much like an fps), Call Of Duty 3

RPG: Blue Dragon, FFXIII rumored to be released too

GTA style: Crackdown and GTA 4 will be first released on the xbox360 with some downloadable content comming soon after

Xbox 360 by FAR.

We have a PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 in my house.

I'd have to say the AMD guy is a huge fanboy. He's clueless if he thinks the PS3 is silent. Mine gets just as loud as my 360.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=841910 (That's just the first page I found on a google search. You can do your own research)

Not to mention all of his other stupid comments. He apparently forgets that Microsoft also has the FREE xbox live Silver package that allows you to update games, have friend list, send messages (voice and text) to friends, Access Xbox Live Marketplace including Xbox Live Arcade, demos, and trailers, and some multiplayer games.

But he won't tell you that. Fanboys never do.

Games - Xbox 360..no question. PS3 games still suck and Sony is only going to continue playing catch up.

Xbox 360 all the way. I currently have GRAW and Live Arcade which comes with 6 games that came free with the console. I also own Rainbow Six Vegas, Oblivion, Test Drive Unlimited, Lost Planet, Saints Row (very much like gta) and Gears of War.

The games are just better and more abundant on Xbox 360. You can get Kameo, Need for speed games, etc etc...

I wouldn't buy a ps3 now.. no way. I have a friend who has it and I ask him what he does with it. He tells me he plays bluray movies. I ask him what games he plays and he tells me Resistance and Flow. He's had resistance for about 6 months now and he is still replaying it over an over and over again because there are no games for ps3. I checked flow and it has been compared to a lava lamp or something in one reveiew. Doesn't sound fun.

If you really want to play games in HD, get and XBOX 360.

Since I have owned both (and a wii to boot) I will share my story.

Long - so cliffs at bottom, along with pic of the setup.

Shortly before christmas the fiance and I bought a 1080p LCD TV. The PS2 just wasn't cutting it on the new screen, so we both decided to go for a new console. Knowing what I did about the console scene, I suggested a 360 as our first choice as the games she really wanted (Tiger woods, a couple FPS, etc) was on it.

Off to the store we go, ended up at Costco to do some shopping and found a nice bundle there with an extra controller. Had what we wanted so we grabbed it. Got it home, hooked it up, and realized my first oversight - no wireless.

The condo we bought isn't ethernet wired, so I had to think fast. I ended up grabbing another WRT54G and turning it to a bridge - easy enough fix.

The real mess happened shortly thereafter. The first comment out of my fiance's mouth when I turned it on was 'is there something wrong with it? why does it sound like a vacuum?' I detest noisy components in my system too.

Noise aside, I turned up the volume to try and drown it out, and then ran into a bigger problem. What happened to the screen and why are there blinking red lights on the front? I had it on all of 10 minutes and it was toast.

Back to Costco, refund/exchange, and re-hooked it up. New unit was just as noisy, and even made more drive noise than the first.

After about 2 weeks of trying to 'get over' the noise neither I or my SO could. Even with my Pioneer Elite 81TXV up to scary levels, that damned fan/drive noise was never quite attenuated. It bothered us so much, that upon running into a PS3 on the next shopping trip we decided to try it out, knowing that we had a good return policy on both consoles. Good games aside, I coudn't deal with the noise.

The first thing I noticed about the PS3 after hooking it up was wondering how to turn it on. Pressing the blue 'power button' didn't do anything... until I realized it was already on... It was dead quiet. Thinking it was too good to be true, I popped in my SACD of Dark side of the moon and noticed a bit of drive seek noise. Then it stopped, and was quiet again. Definately a night and day difference to the 360.

In the end we stuck with the PS3 and returned the 360. While I was sad to see some decent games go like GoW, I was extremely happy to be in silence again. We have TW 07, Resistance, Tennis and Motorstorm, so gaming is still good.

The best aspect of the PS3 has been its versatillity while remaning nice and quiet. I have over 350GB of my DVD's and HD videos on a 500GB Mybook hooked up, and we are constantly adding to the blu-ray collection. Lossless PCM 7.1 audio is stunning... it needs to be heard to be believed. I actually get dissapointed when watching a DVD and have to settle for DD/DTS

In the end we are both happier with the PS3, and more good games are coming. I am far from a fan of Sony, so bias was not an issue. Picked up a wii in February - good times waiting in the cold.

Sorry for the lengthy story... I'm bored.

If you don't have a problem with a noisy system and want pure gaming then go for the 360. I know it is a nitpicky sort of thing... but to me it made all the difference. Also, I understand that no merchandise can be 'lemon free', but it appears the 360 is a little heavy on the failure rate.

Cliffs:

Bought 360 - noisy and died in 10 minutes
replaced 360, even noisier
Bought PS3, very quiet and versatile
returned 360. Great idea, bad implementation.
Love the PS3, have since added a Wii to the family

Setup: Look here

here is a list of the supported 360 games

that said, the 360 may be loud when turning it on (not to me but since a lot of people seem to be complaining about it, i guess they feel it is loud) it is easily overcome by even t.v. speakers. if you are running a 5.1 ht, no problems whatsoever. and if you hate the sound, there is a good possiblity you may get a 360 w/ a rom that has modified firmware available thus allowing you to control the speed of the rom and make it nice and quiet.

shear amount of excellent games for the 360

for ~$310 or so you can get refurbished 360 premiums that have some mods done to them that rectify the main reason people's 360s die. i personally don't sell these but have seen what the person that does sell them do to them and they rectify some shortcomings that ms made in their initial design. the 360 is not running o/ced cpus, but unfortunately there is a design flaw that is causing problems, but can easily be modded to rectify the issue before it is even a problem, or buy one that is already done for you. pm me if you would like the info to the person that sells them already modded to alleviate the reason people have 2 or 3 consoles - they are pretty easy fixes, but it looks like ms just overlooked it and now it is becoming a bit more widespread since the newer games push the console even harder.

imho, the only the thing the ps3 has going for it is it a reasonably priced bd player, sadly with not many good games. but since the hd dvd wars are still in full force with no winner, i am sure the technlology for lower priced standalone bd players will = lower prices, so at that point the ps3 loses one of its major advantages.

and if people bring in the "the 360 has no hdmi" (unless you get the elite at least), that is fine. i have looked at many different displays w/ video going to them via component, vga and hdmi and to be perfectly honest, unless they are very large displays and you sit close you will be hard pressed to see the difference.

for the $$$ the 360 is an excellent console. get a premium and enjoy it the way it was meant to be played - wireless controler/headset. personally a wifi setup was not something i wanted as i would much rather have a cat5e cable going to the 360, which i ran and it runs excellent.

the ps3 doesn't have much game support and there are articles all around that even their head people think it will lose the battle.

also, i wouldn't buy a sony product anymore due to their extreme anti-consumer philosophy. regardless of what branch has done the damage, i really don't care, i just don't like sony as an entire company anymore and will not support them and their crazy rootkit installing products.

I cast a powerful curse on Sony back when lik-sang died. So one in favor of Xbox 360: less evil company.

I'm sorry, but Microsoft has pleased me a lot lately:

forcing 64-bit drivers and OS into the mainstream
much better 4MB memory page support
prefetch
ruining Creative Lab's ****** all up maddox style.
XAudio2 bringing the hope for high quality DTS:I PCI-express sound cards.

Fsck Sony and everything they make.

I do not own an xbox, wii or PS3...

I play the xbox 360 at a friend's place about every other day and its a pretty nice system. I'd get one but I can just play it at his place.

Wii = awesome, but for the type of gaming we do someone is bound to get injured.

Not sure how my 360 is different, but it isn't loud at all. I never hear it while gaming, but I can hear the PC that's near it . I really need to get some quieter components in that PC.

One thing you can look at is some of the new XBL Gold perks that Microsoft is starting to add. There's some new club thing that you can join to get free coupins for things like buy one get one free sammiches and stuff. It looks pretty nifty and I'm waiting on my card right now.

Oh and someone mentioned the XBOX Live Arcade Unplugged or whatever it's called game.. that game annoys me. The games are good, but the fact that I have to put the disc in to play the games is what bothers me. Live Arcade games are inherently impulsive (in my opinion) and having to put a disc in ruins that aspect. I'd rather pay the extra $5 it would cost to buy the games separately.
