I just put my old xbox 360 in my son's room, but now it's too far away from the router to hook up via Ethernet. The Microsoft wifi adapter is still stupid expensive. One of my buddies suggested using an access point and hook that up via Ethernet to the xbox. Since I'm not good at all with this type of stuff, can anyone recommend something? The cheaper the better. Thanks!

i used to use an old linksys WRT54G router with the dd-wrt firmware on it and turned it into a bridge. worked great.

not sure how much he plays online or how serious he takes it, but there is a noticeable difference between wireless and wired connection for online play on 360. at least there was for me.

Is that easy to do (turn it into a bridge) and can you do it with any router? Is there a difference between a bridge and an access point?

It is easy once you know how.. sorry sounds stupid but applies to almost anything lol. Anywho, I decided the same, the adapter was a jip so I bought a refurbished DIR601A1 from amazon and flashed Gargoyle to it. Bridging with Gargoyle is even easier than DDWRT. In fact I never quite got DDWRT to properly bridge. It's all on one page with Gargoyle. So a bridge acts like a client that joins to your main AP and uses it for either its ethernet ports or in repeater mode will act as both a bridge and repeater through its own AP. As a note, leave repeater off when bridging because performance suffers with repeating. Now the trickiest part is flashing the firmware. There is always a risk but what I like about my Dlink is if the firmware corrupts there is a recovery mode that a lot of routers dont have. Now also you need the right kind of router that will take it, I am not sure how many 601a1 routers are still around but the b1 doesn't work with Gargoyle. Keep us posted, yeah save the dough 360 accessories, the hard drive too are way overpriced.

You can get a small travel router that has bridging capability (like this one) and you won't have to mess with custom firmware and too much configuration.
