I used to use my 360 lying down until I needed to send it back for a new one, and since I've had the new one, I've been standing it up and it's scratched 2 disks. I've only been playing it for 2-3 weeks. No, I'm not tilting it with the disc in, it just makes a clunking sound and then says the disc is unreadable, then when I take it out, the disc is scratched.

So the question is: do you stand yours up or leave it on it's side?

I leave it on it's side. I heard that if you stand it up you are blocking a vent. Just hearing things, am not really sure.

was standing up at first, but i felt that the dvd drive would be more stable flat, so i laid it down. also had to relocate it because of realestate issues.

I've heard it's more likely to scratch discs when vertical, and yeah it covers a vent when vert. But horizontal just seems better, I mean I don't ever recall a dvd player that goes vertical.

I'm thinking they should do a survey when you send it in for repair just to see how many of the broken ones are vertical vs horizontal. Seems really unstable vertical too.

vertical, no space on my desk unless i sat the tft on top of it (which would make it annoyingly high)

Laying Down... CD drives like the 360's were never really intended to function vertically... although they DO work, its not a great idea for the drive.

Standing up.. like Davegod, I am spatially poor. Besides, mine gets plenty of ventilation with the fan I installed on it's side...

Beyond that, if my DVD drive ever kicks the bucket, I have another drive under my table that can replace this one, so I'm covered

Laying down. I just don't trust vertical loading of discs. That and I've heard of stories like that of OP, which just supports it even more.

Vertical because i don't have the space, and i got a nifty stand that leaves a 1/4 '' gap on the bottom for the fan. I was told by a friend that vertical actually results in fewer scratched disks, but other then that i haven't heard any proof for which position is better.

Laying down...apparently vertical 360s are known to scratch discs (like you said), so there's no way I'd stand it up.

As for heat issues, HOT AIR RISES. Leave it on its side so that the fans suck out hot air equally.

I try to leave mine horizontally because the dvd drive makes less noise that way (at least in my case). I have had it vertically a few times due to my continuously changing living conditions (dorm -> parents house -> apartment) and haven't had any issues with it set up either way (*knocks on wood*)

Laying down, for sure. Can't knock down a 360 that's already horizontal. It should be OK to run it either way, but why not be safe, if it's an option?

I posted this in another thread:

Also, I should add that I personally think that putting the 360 on it's belly (horizontal) is probably the best way to store it. Call me paranoid, but I want my X360 to get the best cooling it can. Laying it on its belly allows some nice air flow into the system as well as out. If you put it on end, there is a chance that it *might* resrict some of the air flow. Granted, the amount might be ever-so-slight, the X360s arnt know for having great heat dissipation. Just my 2 cents.

Laying down, I had it standing up a few times and it fell over because of my subwoofer (I have a pretty loud sound system and it's sitting right near the sub) and scratched up my Gears of War disc. From now on it lays down. Also seems to get better wireless reception laying down anyways.
