I think the person who wrote this is a total idiot. I own an xbox and must say that it is better than PS2 (which I had for over a year and a half). I can't comment on GC because I've never played it. The person says that the harddrive was a mistake, but I disagree. I put a modchip in my xbox and put an 80gig hdd in there. Now I have about 15 games copied onto the harddrive along with 5 movies and still have more than 50% disk space free. I don't need the game disk anymore for those games that are on the harddrive. This is a huge factor for me. Security-wise, I think microsoft was counting on people developing mod-chips for it because it would be a huge selling point, but it wouldn't look like they intended it to be that way. Sure, the xbox may not have a huge market share right now, but this is the first version of the xbox made by Microsoft. You can't expect it to dominate the market when it hasn't even been out for a year yet. Game-wise, the xbox is on par with PS2, but they are lacking certain big named games like GTA3. GTA3 has driven tons of PS2 sales alone, not the entire array of games. I think that in another year we will be looking at a different story because better games will be out for xbox by then.

xbox does not have the game selection of the ps2. Thats the only thing I will say about it because most of the games I like come out on ps2.

Yeah, Xbox has some very very sweet games lined up. The 2nd gen xbox games are just looking a hell of a lot better overall. Last month Xbox actually sold more units than Gamecube

I don't know about a failure, but I didn't buy it 3 months ago because the PS2 had far more numerous/better games and a far better controller. I heard the S controller took care of the controller thing, but the games will take time. I have two friends who have both:

1) One regrets buying the XBox altogether. He doesn't think Halo was worth the investment.
2) The other one will buy the game on the Xbox if it available on both platforms. Otherwise, they will buy it on the PS2.

XBox still has a chance, but it has to get a better followership in game manufacturers. A lot of games are made for the Computer or the PS2 and then ported over to the XBox. Once more manufacturers start to make games for the XBox and then port them to different platforms, I think the XBox will have taken a serious step ahead.

1.) The controller is not that big. It's very comfortable for me.
2.) They sell a smaller controller that you can buy.

QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE STUPID CONTROLLER!!!

The S contoller is great.

I am totally addicted to NFL2k3 and can't wait for LIVE to come out so I can start smoking fools online.

I may buy a PS2 just for some of the games I can't get on XBOX, like GTA.

It IS a failure.

By dictionary definition, "failure" is "The condition or fact of being insufficient or falling short." And it has fallen way short of M$' expectations.

However, for M$ - with 40 BILLION in cash - it is a(n expensive) failure they can learn from.

XBOX a failure?

1) If Microsoft's goal was to beat the PS2 - YES
2) If Microsoft's goal was to break into the console industry - NO
3) If Microsoft's goal was to make a small console - YES - the xobx is HUGE, LOL!

With Microsoft it was probably just a billion dollar trial that they've learned from and will probably mean that XBOX2 will definitely be competition for Sony.

I'll buy an XBOX once it gets some decent RPG's. Until then, everything I want to play I can play in small amounts at my friend's house. Halo sucked (bad level design). I always liked the controller, and I like the S controller even more. The HDD is a great idea.

As far as the other consoles are concerned, if they want to go online like XBOX does, I think it is simply a mistake to not have a HDD (and 6 million dollar addons for broadband and storage is lame). XBOX will completely dominate this area once it picks up momentum.

ok, the guys more full of it then i thought, near the bottom he tries to take a shot by saying that the xbox creator left. so what? the story is far more complex then that, the creator never had total control, not much at all, he was part of a large team. only thing he did was get the ball rolling. didn't like that so he left heres the book:Unleashing the Xbox for full story, interesting read. originally xbox design was up against a replay tv combo design.

aren't we happy replay tv didn't get it

ah well, i guess on the net any idiot can write articles

that being said, the game selection of the ps2 means nothing compared to pc games. quality over quantity.

that being said, i don't like games like final fantasy. might be blasphemous i guess. repetitive leveling up tasks, lame stories, annoying save points etc bores me.

i like consoles for arcade style games.

Xbox is by far my favorite console. Here is how I view how the consoles compare (I have all three).

Game Controllers:
1)PS2
2)Xbox
3)Gamecube

I think although different but the PS2 comes out ahead simply because it feels more comfortable. The Xbox does feel very comfortable and has the best rumble feel of the three controllers. The Gamecube controller sucks for force feedback, design is only good for a few games, horrible for sports games and just doesn't feel as nice as the PS2 or Xbox controllers.

Look:
1)Xbox
2)PS2
3)Gamecube

I thought originally that the Gamecube would be first here but when I put it next to my other components, it just looks akward. The Xbox looks the best although I wish to top would be flat and not curved.

Games:
1)PS2
2)Xbox
3)Gamecube

This may vary depending on the user. For me, I love all types of games and PS2 has more to offer in this area. Although I think for next year, Xbox has the best games coming out of all the three gaming consoles. Gamecube has some fun games but they get tiresome very quickly and are not as challenging as some PS2 or Xbox games. I read somewhere that Mario Sunshine sold alot less than Nintendo had originally expected and so they are considering chaning their philosophy and marketing more towards the adult gamers and not kiddie gamers. Xbox has by far the best sports and racing games.

Innovation:
1)Xbox
2)PS2
3)Gamecube

Xbox is the winner easily in this category. They included a hard drive and there are a few games that will make really good use of this as time goes by. The Xbox Live is something I am really looking forward to. Sony and Nintendo see online gaming as an afterthought but Xbox made a commitment to this. I really can't wait to use Xbox Live when it comes out. My only gripe is that I wasn't one of the users chosen to beta test Xbox Live PS2 had some nifty connections (USB, Firewire) on their unit plus w/ the Linux add on made a nice and cheap linux system. They also included a DVD player back when DVD players still averaged around $200-$300 each. Nintendo really didn't bring anything new to the Gamecube. Their Gameboy Advance + Gamecube is sort of like Sega's controllers w/ VMU's. The Gamecube is small which is nice for portability but I don't really think there are that many users who have a need to transport their gaming consoles.

I like RPGs for the interresting story lines, plot twists, and whatnot. I like most of the games I have played, I dont like sports or racnig games, for the most part. Different interrests.

I dont game on the PC.

I think Xbox is a failure mainly because there is not as wide a selection of games, and certainly no killer games like GTA3/4, Metal Gear Solid (yeah, I know there is a version coming out, but it's a year later), and Final Fantasy. That said, it usually takes three tries for microsoft to do anything right. Remember, IE 1 and 2 sucked but 3 was great, Windows 1 and 2 were crappy, but 3.0 changed the PC world. Same thing with Windows CE, 1.0, 2.0 and finally Pocket PC 2002. So I predict that we will be all switching to Xbox 3 somepoint in the future.

Morrowind for Xbox is the best RPG I've ever played.

PS2 has waay more games, but the Xbox selection is growing and there are GREAT title's coming out soon. Ghost Recon, Medal Of Honor, Hitman2 (already out).

I don't think I'm that picky tho, not as much as some of you, I mean I grew up in the Atari era, where I thought Pitfall was innovation incarnate. Hell, 5 on 5 Football on Intellivision rocked my world so to me, Xbox is freakin amazing. PS2 is as well, for that matter.

Oh, I just remembered why I got the Xbox over the other two consoles. After Xmas, I went to Toys R Us, asked for the Gamecube, dude said they were out of stock...so I bought the Xbox. Very scientific stuff.

How quicky we forget that the box has not been out for a year. The ps2 didnt have any noteworthy games until 1.5 years after its release. Calling the xbox a failure at this point is like calling digital TV a failure. It is just too soon to tell. And since the xbox is currently outselling the gamecube, what would u people call that? IMO all three are good systems. but only one (x-box, of course) has the potential to be great.

u got ps2 for people who like to get head in a car. nintendo for mario fanatics and kids. xbox is for all of the good gamers out there who take online seriously.I was going to say xbox is for hardcore gamers but if one was really hardcore they would have 2 or 3 of the "next-gen" consoles.

Well PS2 had many more games out by virtue of compatibility with PS1. I see your point but gamecube and xbox both came out about the same time and gamecube is outselling the xbox currently as well. Microsoft needs to have a few killer exclusive games if it wants to stay in the game.

I think it still remains to be seen how the xbox does. Its definitely not doing well in Asia. Only Microsoft is able to dump such a ridiculous amount of $$$ into it, Sony or Nintendo certainly cant and therefore they are definitely way more efficient in terms of putting a profitable product vs amount of money spent in R&D. If MS had the budget of Sony or Nintendo it would be hard pressed to create anything worthwhile. Granted MS can afford to lose tens of millions of dollars cuz they have billions at their disposal.
