You are thinking too short term.

They are probabaly getting ready for the next generation console.

I'm sure they are, but it's really funny. It's like Yugo making a patent for the internal combustion engine

That's when their original patent was filed. This was a continuation of it.

snes had online play too. remember playstation and xbox are the new kids on the block. i bought my cube from the apple store on my dreamcast good times(talk about two dead platforms, both appreciating in value however). there was also a 'windows ce' logo on dreamcasts and a snes2 was getting a cdplayer from sony so... ironic indeed.

They will probably sue to keep MS and Sony out of online gaming, and in turn make no online games themselves. If nobody is making the games because of lawsuits then Nintendo won't have to worry about competing in a market that they aren't interested in.

I realize that, thus why I said "Originally filed in..."

Those are the dumbest patents I've ever seen. I should just goto the patent office and patent, Use of CPU and GPU in a home video game entertainment system :disgust:

Patents are pretty ridiculous nowadays. I'm starting to think they're becoming almost irrelevant due to the absurdity of what gets approved.

By the time the current teenagers take control, intellectual property will be a thing of the past.

Actually, this patent has nothing to do with a new console. Nintendo confirmed they were just re-upping these patents from the old 64DD addon to the N64 (never caught on in America (can't remember if it ever even went on sale here), but was used in Japan).

I've never heard of the Genesis or the snes having online capabilities, considering the internet wasnt even really widely used by the general public at all when they came out... although maybe point to point with modems? please expound.

The two patents detail a "home video game system with hard disk drive and Internet access capability", but the second filing adds provision for "substantially real-time" online multi-player gaming, connection via an online gaming service, support for online "player performance data", using the connection to download information and do so securely through an authentication process, and the communication across the Net of "audio input signals".

So it's basically Xbox & Xbox live? MS has had game hosting sites and done this with PC's through "The Zone"...for what...8 years now? What about Blizzards Battle.net? That's been up and running since '96.

I just see this as another uselessly vague patent. Technically, couldn't MS just do what the modding community has done all along and add in a dashboard of sorts to turn it into a media device and then market it as a home media center that just happens to play games well? Skirt around the wording of calling it a gaming system?

It was called the X-Band Modem or something similar, if I recall correctly. Google it.

I'm almost positive Sega had something like this for the Genesis 32(or was it 64?) add on thing that never took off. I'm pretty sure one of those add on things had a modem for game hosting.

The SNES and Genesis modem thing was called Xband by Catapult. I had the SNES one. I played SSFII on it and it was pretty bad. The game speed was set at 4 stars but the actual gameplay speed was about -1 stars. Good idea, but I think it was too early.

You're thinking of the 32x, which didn't have a modem iirc. The only thing with online capability was the XBand modem

I guess technically Nintendo could sue MS and Sony if they really wanted to; however, I doubt they could afford the negative press they'd receive for what would appear in the public in every single paper and major news outlet online about how they're trying to ream MS and Sony for money they don't really deserve, considering that Nintendo doesn't even employ that technologiy in their current console.
