I'm buying an Xbox360 + Kinect for a friend so he can play with his kids (3-4 year olds).

I thought about the Wii, but the Xbox360 is still more advanced/has much more life left in it (the Wii-U is coming out soon.)

I'm also gonna buy him 3-4 games along with the console. What games do you think I should get him?

I'm thinking of picking up something out of this list:

Kinect Adventures (comes with Kinect I think??)
Kinect Sports
Kinectimals
Dance Central
Sonic Free Rider
Joy Ride
Child of Eden

And there's a bunch of promising titles coming out early 2012:

Kinect Sesame Street TV
Rush (Pixar)
Kinect Nat Geo TV

These are all kinect titles. Are there any non-kinect titles worth considering for kids? What do you guys recommend?

Also, how many controllers should I get?

All the Lego games!

Seriously..Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, Harry Potter. They're winners for almost all kids, and they make enough of them to find some for whatever they're into. Plus, they have co-op play, which is HUGE for younger kids to play together.

Well, uh, how many kids will be playing?

Controllers, especially wireless controllers, ain't cheap. They can be as much or more than games. So I wouldn't worry about that if you're already buying 2-3 games. I'd say one extra wireless controller should be fine.

Thanks, completely forgot about those. Which one is the best/most suitable for kids?

I wouldn't count out the Wii. Its got a huge selection of kid friendly games, and 3-4 year olds aren't going to notice that its not as advanced as the Xbox 360. On the other hand your friend will much prefer the 360 when he's playing games by himself. I suspect neither him nor his kids will be overwelmed with Kinect. Outside of Dance Central (which is probably a bit much for kids that age) reviews of Kinect games pretty much have all been terrible. Don't depend on the Kinect turning the Xbox 360 into something the kids will enjoy as much as Wii.

At least for non-Kinect games you'll really want one controller for each of the kids plus one for their father if he's going to be playing with them, up to a limit of four. Kinect games might allow players to share a controller, I'm not sure.

If I were to get a Wii, what games should I get for kids? It seems like the games mentioned before in this thread pretty much cover what's available on the Wii, and the Kinect seems more user friendly for kids (no need to hold anything.)

The sesame street game looks awesome for kids

I play Wii w/ my 3 and 4 year old kids. We play New Mario wii, Kirby Epic yarn, and Kirby returns to dreamland. Epic yarn is great for kids, you can't die, great for young players.

There's no controller to hold, but that doesn't mean that Kinect games are easy to control. A common complaint about Kinect games in the reviews I've seen is that controls don't work well at all and end up being very fustrating. Even when the controls work well, like in Dance Central, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's something that kids young could easily handle. I suspect they'd have might trouble memorizing and performing all the moves necessary. On the other hand they might have fun just "dancing" in front of the TV regardless.

Yah, it would definitely one to get if you're going the Kinect route. I'm just not sure how many more games there are like this or are likely to be.

For the Wii its a bit hard for me to say with kids that young. My three nephews range in age from 4 to 10, but the youngest one is often just along for the ride when playing on the Wii with the other two. He seemed to enjoy playing Raving Rabbids 2, Boom Blox Bash Party, and Wii Sports Resort.

if you talking about future proof and long lasting..... go for ps3. they have the move controller.

360 will soon be replaced by the new xbox around the corner. the wii is soon to be replaced by wii u also around the corner. ps3 claim to last as long as 10 years however they are working a new sony gaming hardware which is so little to know about right now. probly come out 2014 or 2015.

theory:
the new sony gaming hardware assuming ps4 will come out 2014.... it will play all ps1 to ps4 games. some sites shows a picture of PS and something that look like an O. PSO probly stand for Playstation Orien. Playstation Orien will be the assumed final Playstation that atleast wont see another playstation for another 40 years.

While the Playstation orien comes out..... the ps3 will still be active and still companys making games for it. ps3 games can be played on ps4. ps3 games will cost 39.99 while the ps4 games will cost 59.99

When they said ps3 will last as far as 10 years..... they mean this..... when ps4 come sout and ps3 will still be supported. soon we will see almost every title have the graphic like killzone 3 or beyond.... they will squeez out all the true juice of the ps3 as time goes by.

You can buy a Wii Mario Kart bundle for just over $100 now, which is a pretty good deal.

I made a decision a while ago that the only games I will buy for Wii are Wii-exclusives. Cross-platform games on the Wii just suck, IMO. There are plenty of Wii-exclusives worth buying, but now that I have a PS3 to compare against, I buy even less of them cause I think the graphics look terrible on a 50" HDTV. My four year-old most of the time will pick to play ModNation on the PS3 over Mario Kart. He likes Just Dance for Kids on the Wii, but we'll have a Kinect soon and I'll be buying Just Dance for Kids 2 for the Kinect, not the Wii.

Mini Ninjas is a sweet game too for kids.
Also, and I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, Toy Story 3 is simply an AMAZING game for kids. Pretty much endless with missions, huge open world to explore.... impeccably done too. Both my kids (girl 8 and boy 10) can play this to no end.

As previously mentioned, LEGO games. Star Wars is the best for sure. Indy and Batman pretty much suck. Harry Potter is good as well. I can not express the hours spent playing those games.

Yeah, I thought he was trolling. It went as well over as the 360 HDDVD.

Must be... I bought 2 Move controllers hoping they'd be adapted well but they haven't had anything worth while come out for it. Sony made me look like a fool. Never again...

How old are your kids?

If you play Halo, COD, etc.. in front of them, forget about the kiddie games.. haha.

My son loves cars, and Forza has that super easy mode, he plays it constantly. He also does some combat training in blops, and plays the co-op with me on Halo and Gears.

I asked if he was interested in the sesame street kinect game...nope.. he's 6 yrs. old.

My in-laws got me a 360 for my birthday with the intention of getting a kinect for Christmas and being able to play with my kid. Aside from the kinectimals and whatnot, I have a copy of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and would say that's pretty kid friendly. I've been playing through it and it is very forgiving in terms of difficulty so young kids won't get too frustrated.
