xbox live? can some one quickly clear this up for me?

i got a 360 about a month ago, and my 1 month gold trial perished...now i cant seem to play online in test drive unlimited, i just have AI cars

if thats the case, then what the hell is silver for? i thought the whole point of the 360 was the online gameplay?

Yes, you need Gold to play online.

It's not rubbish if you can download demos and Xbox Live Arcade games with it. Of course Gold is better...but it is nice that it isn't required to try out games before you buy them.
