... can't seem to get a straightforward answer, even at xbox-scene.

I want to use my v1.0 XBOX as a media player, streaming files from my PC in the other room (via LAN cable). Nothing more is a requirement - don't even do XBOX Live. Can you tell me the cheapest/easiest way to do this ?

- modchip or softmod flash ?
- XBMC, I presume... FTP that over after the modchip/flash ?
- what about accessing the network files... is that done through XBMC ? How do I navigate the interface (dvd remote vs. xbox controller, etc.)?

Anything else ?

UPDATE **... well it's done... $75 later (I gave it to the dude at 1 and I got it back at 5 - comes with LEDs and everything for the x2.6 chip - how's that for service?), I have XBMC as my dash and I can see my network shares... I can't believe this thing plays all kinds of formats... including rmvb Better than getting a wireless media player set-top for ~$150.

you install XBMC through FTP. just get slayer's evox automated installer.

and yes, with XBMC, you can access your shared PC files

- you can do either
- yes XBMC works fine
- i haven't done it myself, but i believe its done through XBMC because it has a directory for "My Movies on PC" in it (atleast in XBMP it does, and XBMC i hear is better but I don't use either).

you basically just need to install a mod (hard or soft) and install a new dash (i use evox yet everyone loves avalunch more, but i put evox on there before avalaunch was even out and it does the job just fine), and install XBMC (i use XBMP, again before XBMC was even out) on your HD and run it from the new dash.

Of course, but I presume that function will remain unchanged after the modding... I won't be putting games on the HDD or using burned discs. So it will remain unchanged, correct ?

i would recommend to go with the hardmod and an xecutor 2.6. the xecutor 3 chip is awesome and has all these features, but they are all a buncha features that personally i don't know what they are even for. i have an old xecutor 2.2 lite and it does everything that i want it to do. look at all the specs of the chips and find which one you want. but definitely go with a hard, SOLDERED chip. i strongly recommend getting an xecutor chip.

aphex, what did you do with the real rh71?!

if you want live, go modchip if not go TSOP. Best option for a noob would be to get someone to do it for you, $20-$30 should do it.

what's the benefit of a soldered chip ? I looked at some guides and the first thing it warned about softmodding was that it can damage the xbox (which I'm sure is just a standard warning). Is a hard chip simply safer ? Don't I have to mess with the BIOS regardless ?

Keep in mind that if you flash the TSOP (original bios) you can't get on Xbox live anymore (if that's important to you). If you get a solderless modchip with a switch, you can turn it off and still use Xbox live (unless you install a larger hard drive, which will now get you banned as well).

XBMC can stream things over a network perfectly well.

well with softmods, you can't go on xbox live, and i'm not sure if you can go back or not. with solderless chips, they tend to "loosen" up sometimes. with a soldered chip, they are the most secure and now have switches so you can turn them on and off.

i been into the xbox dev scene since day one, and i strongly recommend an xecutor chip. if you are in the maryland area i could install one for you.

Same here I picked my guy from albis's link ... most of the folks are on craigslist as well.

Good luck!

Do you have Mech Assault?, Action Replay?

You can do a soft mod and a hard mod. A soft mod requires them 2 things I listed above, a hardmod requires a mod chip.

The first step after modding either by software or by hardware, is to install a new dashboard such as AVAlaunch or EvolutionX, you can only do this by booting a modified BIOS.

thanks guys... I've PM'd a few installers in my area.

And since I don't plan on going on XBL ever again, I'm hopeful it will be a cheap $20 job for them...

wow, a lot of knowledgeable people in here..
My kids have about 30 xbox games.... is it easy to mod the xbox so that the games are resident on the hard drive, rather than needing the different DVD's.... they're always getting scratches on them. Minor ones, but eventually they add up to a non-working dvd.

Ok, I just came across this article that states "XBOX2 PC" version will pretty much do what I want. I am about ready to pay someone (really reputable around here) $75 to do my mod (includes X2.6 chip)... think that's a good idea or shall I wait another year for this XBOX2 to come out ?

I have had it via Halo 2 free trial... I've gone on it about 4 times total since November.. I just don't like the slower action (love UT2k4 online). As for other games... I play mostly sports games and I can't possibly sit through a whole game the entire time with another player... just not my thing. Anyway, it looks like I'll still have the option since there will be a switch with the x2.6, yah ?

i didnt' really read anything in this thread, but i'll chip in. I've had a modded xbox for over a year now, but just recently wanted to set it up to stream media files from my PC. After you have the modchip and have XBMC installed, all you need is a wireless access point. Outpost.com has an airlink one for $19.99 + shipping which works excellent as an AP Client. Opened it up, configured it through my PC, hooked it up to my xbox, selected which files I wanted to share on my PC, and everything worked smoothly.
