XBMC can stream things over a network perfectly well.
just to clarify (from all the other million xbox threads we've had), having a larger hard drive will not necessarily get you banned. If you install the hard drive, and then sign up for xbox live, (and i think the hard drive needs to be locked), then you can still use XBL. If you've already signed up and then switch your hard drive then you will be banned.

At least that's what everyone says

And since I don't plan on going on XBL ever again, I'm hopeful it will be a cheap $20 job for them...

aww man ... xbox live is what KEEPS me playing my xbox
I have had it via Halo 2 free trial... I've gone on it about 4 times total since November.. I just don't like the slower action (love UT2k4 online). As for other games... I play mostly sports games and I can't possibly sit through a whole game the entire time with another player... just not my thing. Anyway, it looks like I'll still have the option since there will be a switch with the x2.6, yah ?

then you must not be playing halo 2 with good people the games get very intense. i'm at like level 12 on big team battle now and we get into some really good battles, even with random people because the majority of the people at that level don't suck.

but i see where you come from w/the sports. i played ESPN on there 2 times. it doesn't let you play quarters less than 5mins online. why i do not know. i like playing 3 min quarters in football games. other than those i am not big on sports games.

but one thing is for sure, xbox live is by FAR the best investment I have made w/my xbox.

SOFTMOD!! I did it for the same exact purpose you did. Worked perfectly with a 1.0 and 1.6 XBox. Get the Action Replay from Best buy- it was 29.99.

if all it takes is softmodding, why is he trying to sell me the chip too ? Is there another reason (playing burned games, etc.)? Also, what does action replay have to do with this stuff ? Thx.

I would softmod if I were you. You can do it without opening your xbox, and the only cost is renting mechassualt overnight to do the mod. Basic steps:

1) Load the hacked Mechassault savegame onto an xbox memory card or USB flash drive.
2) copy the savegame to your xbox's hard drive using the built-in savegame manager.
3) run mechassualt on your xbox & load the savegame from the hard drive. Your xbox will then load linux.
4) FTP into your xbox and move all files from drive C to your PC. Burn these to a CD for safekeeping.
5) Move all files necessary for the UDE2 exploit onto the C drive of your xbox.
6) Remove the Mechassualt disk and reboot. Your xbox will now boot to a hacked desktop.
7) Return mechassualt to blockbuster.
8) Profit.

This method has several advantages: it's essentially free, it's completely reversible (just move the originial files back onto the C drive of the xbox), it does not require opening the xbox at all, and it doesn't require loading up the hacked savegame every time you want to run the softmod.

I have done this to several xboxes (1.0 and 1.4) with no problems at all. I reversed the mod on one of them, and it has been playing happily on xbox live for the past 6 months. I would not bother with a chip unless you want to go on live, which you don't. If you want details/help, just PM me.

yeah I PMed rh71 with the same process.

However it makes more sense to just buy the game used from Gamestop. I used the Splinter Cell exploit and it was 7 bucks at Gamestop, and to rent a game at blockbuster is $6.49.

I use XBMC as my dash on my Xbox. It's not as hard as it seems at first, reading the threads in Xbox-scene. I just installed my mod chip, ran the Slayer disk and copied XBMC to my hard drive. Set the boot directory in my mod chip to the XBMC directory and it was done. I could do it all (with a solderless chip anyway) in under an hour easy now.

Damn, at the video store near me they charge $3 for 2 nights (not Blockbuster).

thats not bad then. I figured for the same price might as well keep the game if I ever have any problems.

I didnt realize it was this easy to softmod.
Why would somebody do the modchip if the softmod does evrything elso a modchip does (minus x-boxlive)?

The only confusing part is the ftp part. Is that easy to do? I have folders shared on my house using xp pro and I have set up static addresses for them.(wired lan)
Network stuff always messes me up only because this is where I always have problems.

Any links for a more idiot proof way to do the softmod (i have splinetr cell)

well you would still need to buy Action Replay so that's about half the price of doing the modchip... unless you already have AR... that plus the XBL capability would be a reason...

XBox Live is a great gaming service. Unfortunately, I just got banned. If anyone here has an EEPROM I can buy off of them (unbanned from Live, and I believe the box can't have been taken onto Live before) please PM me - name a price.

You'll need a modchip and a giant hard drive. I think Xbox games average 2-3GB, but some are 8GB+, so you'll want a large hard drive unless you feel like deleting and transferring new ones over all the time (probably a pain). If that is all you are looking to do with the modded xbox, wouldn't it be easier to burn backup copies of the games if you have a burner? You probably need a modchip still to play burned copies, but you could just play the burned copies and leave the originals in a safe place.

Why would you need to buy Action Replay? You can use any USB flash drive for the hacked savegame, and if you need a program to get the savegame on the flash drive it is easy to find.

woah..this thread came out the same night i decided to buy executer 3.0. looks like i may go with softmodding too because i dont feel like opening up my xbox, nor spending $60 for the modchip.

in my opinon, xbox-scene forum posts/tutorials are not very well written. it feels like reading essays written by middle school children.

XBS tutorials are meant for people who have some clue what they're doing. You don't seem very comfortable in opening nor modding your box, therefore your hesitation and angst towards the tutorials.

$75 bucks sounds like a pretty decent deal for getting a 2.6 installed locally, that's about how much i charge. Honestly for the cost and hassle of doing a softmod, getting mechassault/007, the Action Replay or the adapter for the flash drive, you may as well pay to have a chip installed.

thats totally true. Im overwhelmed with the amount of info at XBS, the variety of different opinons, and Im hestitant at opening my xbox. Im perfectly fine with computer hardware/software though.

I bit my tongue and just went out and bought a used copy of splinter cell. Im breaking out the soldering iron as we speak to make the usb cable, and now Im at the xbin ftp site trying to download stuff. maybe I'll have this baby softmodded tonight.

cPu - if you took offense my bad, I meant that in a nice way. Honestly - it's not hard at all. I was nervous as hell when I first did mine but it's not hard at all. It's just:

- Install chip
- Flash BIOS on chip
- Install dashboard and apps (get Slayer's Auto Installer to make things easy - one ISO file that formats your HD and installs all the popular apps)

Simple I was gonna try the TSOP/exploit style mods (no chip needed) but I wanted the ability to play on Live with a simple flip of a switch. I don't know your purpose of getting a modded XBox - gaming or a neat lil do it all box, but a chip is a great invest IMO.
